The LM5 is a two-way standmount design by Lorenzo Audio Labs, a maker of artisan loudspeakers based in Granada, Spain. The company was set up by Miguel Lorenzo Castro, who earlier co-founded Kroma Audio, and Joseph M. Gallart, and the pair cite more than 20 years of designing and building speakers, including OEM work for other brands and time as a hi-fi distributor. The current range covers the LM1 MK2, LM2, LM3 and LM6 in the Classic Collection and The Essence in the Bravo Collection, along with Art Deco equipment stands. The LM5 is supplied together with matching stands, and the height and weight figures include them.
Key specs that matter
A 3/4-inch soft dome tweeter works with a 7.5 inch carbon fibre woofer through a phase-optimised passive crossover. Lorenzo quotes a frequency range of 33 Hz to 25 kHz, a sensitivity of 88 dB and a nominal impedance of 8 ohm. Lorenzo suggests amplification rated between 30 and 300 watts. With its stand, each speaker measures 111 cm high, 30 cm wide and 35 cm deep and weighs 26.5 kg.
Engineering and use context
Each cabinet has 21 mm walls of phenolic laminated wood bonded to an elastomer layer in a constrained-layer sandwich, a method intended to damp panel vibration. The low end is reflex tuned, and the port sits at the front, meaning the back panel does not need a large gap to the wall for the port to breathe. The crossover is hand-welded by wire, without any circuit board, and sits in its own sealed chamber inside the cabinet, and it is assembled from Mundorf and Pathaudio parts. Internal wiring is high-purity copper. Lorenzo replaces several usual metal or plastic parts with Panzerholz for the connector nuts, knobs and insulating feet. The natural wood veneers are handcrafted by an artisan from the fourth generation of his family, and the veneer list runs from Macassar Ebony and Ziricote through Elm Root, Walnut Root, Pau Ferro and Tamo Ash to White Ebony, plus a high-gloss black wood option.
Pairing
The benign nominal load and moderate efficiency suit a broad span of solid-state or valve amplifiers, from modest integrated amplifiers up to larger power amplifiers. Because the stands come with the speakers, no separate stand purchase is needed, and the Panzerholz feet already provide the isolation between speaker and floor.
Alternatives
The current Lorenzo Audio Labs catalogue lists no other stand-mount model besides the LM5.
