The LM3 is a two-way loudspeaker from Lorenzo Audio Labs, the Spanish company founded in 2016 in Granada by Miguel Lorenzo Castro and Josep M. Gallart. Both founders have more than 20 years of experience in loudspeaker design and distribution. The LM3 aims to push a two-way design beyond its usual limits in bandwidth and output, and although the monitor and stand are made separately, they are joined and presented as one unit.
Key specs that matter
It uses a 12 in woofer with a paper cone and an AlNiCo magnet, and an AMT tweeter loaded by a horn. Frequency response is 25 Hz to 23 kHz, sensitivity is 94 dB and nominal impedance is 8 ohms, with 20 W to 300 W recommended. The speaker with its stand measures 1170 mm high, 515 mm wide and 415 mm deep, and weighs 55 kg.
Engineering and use context
Lorenzo builds 41 mm thick walls, made from phenolic laminated wood, and the company uses constrained-layer elastomer in its enclosures to absorb vibration from the drivers. The cabinet and the tweeter horn are machined on five-axis CNC equipment. The AlNiCo magnet on the woofer is a classic material chosen by designers seeking a particular motor behaviour, while the AMT tweeter's pleated membrane gives high efficiency to match the 12 in woofer's output. The crossover is phase-optimised and hand-soldered point to point, without a circuit board, using parts from Mundorf, Jantzen and PathAudio. Twin reflex ports fire downward, coupling the bass to the floor. The steel feet are designed in-house, with a lower piece of Panzerholz, a dense compressed wood, to filter vibration from the floor, and these discs can be removed on carpet. The finish is natural wood veneer applied by hand by a fourth-generation craftsman whose family has worked with marquetry since 1888, and the standard choices range from ziricote, pau ferro and tamo ash to Macassar ebony, elm root, walnut root, white ebony and high-gloss black, with other woods possible on request. Lorenzo Audio Labs describes the LM3 as adaptable to large, medium and small rooms because of its drivers, and the company insists on handcrafted production. The range also includes the LM1 MK2, LM2 and LM6.
Pairing
The high sensitivity and steady load let the LM3 work with low-power valve amplifiers from 20 W as well as large solid-state designs. The large woofer and deep bass extension suit rooms from small to large.
Alternatives
Lorenzo Audio Labs' LM1 MK2 is the larger model of the Classic Collection.
