The Ergo 620 is a compact stand-mount speaker with two drivers and a reflex port, belonging to the Ergo line, which Canton describes as its oldest series, made at the company factory in Weilrod im Taunus. This generation has been produced since 2008, replacing the Ergo 602, at a launch price of about EUR 1,098 per pair, and Canton now sells it at EUR 549 per speaker. In this series it sits beside the flat, closed Ergo 610, which uses the same size of driver.
Key specs that matter
A 174 mm aluminium bass-midrange driver works with a 25 mm aluminium-manganese dome tweeter, dividing the band at 3,000 Hz. Frequency range runs from 33 Hz to 40,000 Hz, impedance is 4 to 8 ohm and efficiency is 86.5 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m. Load capacity is 70 W nominal and 130 W music. The cabinet stands 34 cm high, 20.5 cm wide and 27.5 cm deep and weighs 7.5 kg, with the reflex port firing to the rear.
Engineering and use context
The light and stiff aluminium cone sits in a triple-folded wave surround and is driven by a strong motor, and the tweeter is mounted behind a transmission front plate. Canton uses its DC crossover technology with selected parts, fits high-grade internal wiring and braces the enclosure several times inside, and places damping at strategic spots in the cabinet. The enclosure volume is sized to suit the bass-midrange driver. Real wood veneers in cherry, wenge or ash are finished by hand in numerous steps, and a removable aluminium front grille reveals a velvet-covered baffle. The bi-wiring and bi-amping terminal uses 24-carat gold-plated screw clamps that also accept banana plugs. Rubber feet come in the box, and Canton grants up to 10 years of warranty on passive speakers.
Pairing
Canton positions the Ergo 620 as a stereo pair for classic hi-fi use or as effect speakers in a multichannel system, pairing it with the Ergo 690 DC floorstander, the Ergo 655 Center and the Ergo SUB 650 subwoofer for a home cinema set. The LS 660 stand lifts it to ear height, and Canton suggests its Smart Amp 5.1 as a matching amplifier. With an impedance that can reach 4 ohm, amplifiers that stay stable into 4 ohm loads are the safer choice, and the split terminals allow separate channels for woofer and tweeter.
Alternatives
The Canton GLE 30 is a two-way compact from the GLE line with a titanium woofer of the same size and a 90 W nominal rating in a 19 x 36 x 28 cm cabinet.
