The Debut 2.0 B5.2 is the more compact of two stand-mount speakers in ELAC's Debut 2.0 series, the second generation of the Debut range designed by Andrew Jones and introduced in March 2018. Every model of the series was redesigned from scratch. The lineup comprises the F6.2 and F5.2 floorstanding models, the B6.2 and B5.2 bookshelf models, the C6.2 and C5.2 centre channels, the SUB3010 powered subwoofer, the OW4.2 surround speaker and the A4.2 Atmos module.

Key specs that matter

A tweeter and a woofer share the band in a bass reflex cabinet, divided at 2,200 Hz. Response is specified as 46 Hz to 35,000 Hz, sensitivity of 86 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m, and a nominal impedance of 6 ohm. Maximum power input is 120 W. Each cabinet is 180 mm wide, 341 mm high and 234 mm deep and weighs 5.9 kg. The finish is Black Ash vinyl, and ELAC sells the speaker in pairs.

Engineering and use context

Both drivers were custom designed by Andrew Jones. A wide-roll surround is fitted to the 1-inch cloth dome tweeter, a change that Jones made to address tweeter performance so the diaphragm could reach both lower and higher in frequency than in the first Debut generation. A new waveguide in front of it controls directivity, widening it a little, and minimises the diffraction effects that a conventional box enclosure produces. The 5.25-inch woofer uses a woven aramid-fibre cone, revised for greater stiffness and damping, with an oversized magnet and a vented pole piece. Its redesigned dust cap smooths the woofer response and ends the leakage that came through the oversized voice-coil vent of the earlier model. The cabinet is built from CARB2-rated MDF and is larger than in the original Debut, and internal bracing, including a centre brace, increases stiffness and reduces cabinet vibration. A dual-flared bass port faces forward, which ELAC states allows placement against a wall or inside a bookshelf. Connections are made through 5-way metal binding posts, the terminal type fitted to every passive speaker in the Debut 2.0 family.

Pairing

The nominal impedance and maximum power input together set the amplifier range suited to this model. Within the series, the C5.2 centre, the SUB3010 subwoofer, the OW4.2 surround and the A4.2 Atmos module can extend a B5.2 pair into a multichannel system.

The ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2 is the bigger bookshelf design in the Debut 2.0 range and uses a 6.5-inch woofer.
