The Debut 2.0 B6.2 is the larger of the two-way stand-mounts in the second Debut generation from ELAC, engineered by Andrew Jones, who was Vice President of Engineering at ELAC when the series appeared. ELAC announced the nine-model Debut 2.0 line on March 1, 2018, with availability from March 15, 2018, and the B6.2 took over from the original Debut B6. ELAC America lists a regular price of USD 479 per pair.

Key specs that matter

Drivers are a 1 inch cloth dome tweeter and a 6.5 inch woofer with an aramid fibre cone, divided by a crossover at 2,200 Hz. Frequency response runs from 44 Hz to 35,000 Hz. Sensitivity is 87 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m, nominal impedance is 6 ohm and maximum power input is 120 W. The enclosure measures roughly 195 x 375 x 268 mm in width, height and depth. The cabinet is built from CARB2 rated MDF and wrapped in black ash vinyl, and each speaker has 5-way metal binding posts.

Engineering and use context

Against the original B6, the tweeter is an all-new unit. Its silk dome uses a different cloth material and doping and sits on a larger wide-roll surround that extends its upper output, and it is mounted in a revised wide-dispersion waveguide that is shallower than before, intended to control directivity and reduce diffraction from the box edges. The aramid woofer cone was redesigned for more stiffness and damping and received a new dust cap. Because of the new drivers the crossover point dropped from 3 kHz on the B6 to its current value. Inside, side-to-side bracing was added to stiffen the thick MDF walls and cut panel resonance. For bass reflex loading, ELAC moved to dual flared ports that open on the front panel, a change the company made to give more freedom in where the speaker can stand. The revised aramid woofer, the new tweeter and the added bracing are the three areas ELAC names as the main steps over the B6.

Pairing

With its moderate load and average sensitivity, the B6.2 is an easy match for mainstream integrated amplifiers and AV receivers, and the maximum input rating sets the upper limit for amplifier size. The black ash vinyl finish is shared with the other Debut 2.0 models, so it can be combined with the matching floorstanders, centre speaker and subwoofers of the same generation in a multichannel system, and the SUB3010 subwoofer launched with the Debut 2.0 line can be added for the lowest octave.
