Cabasse, a French company founded in Brittany in 1950, makes the Antigua MC170 as a three-way stand-mount model. It belongs to the MC170 range, which also includes the Jersey MC170 floorstander, the Socoa MC170 centre and the Orion MC170 subwoofer. It is meant for shelf or stand placement, and its list price is EUR 699.
Key specs that matter
Midrange and treble come from the 10T15MC, a two-way coaxial driver, while a single 17 cm long-throw woofer handles the bass. The crossover points are 700 Hz and 3,600 Hz. Cabasse rates the frequency response at 60 Hz to 20,000 Hz and sensitivity at 88 dB for 1 W at 1 m. Nominal impedance is 8 ohms with a minimum of 3.2 ohms. The speaker is rated for 75 W continuous and 550 W peak. It measures 40 x 23 x 30 cm and weighs 9 kg. Finish options are All Black, Bleached Oak, Dark Oak, Black Oak, White Lacquer and Black Lacquer.
Engineering and use context
The coaxial midrange and tweeter unit is a development of the driver used in the Cabasse Eole satellite, and Cabasse states that it suits both stereo and multichannel use. The woofer frame was shaped by Cabasse to be as rigid as possible and to keep its resonance low, which extends bass reach. Its long voice coil is wound on a Kapton former and is fully ventilated. In the MC170 range the woofer is set vertically instead of in the baffle, and the port fires downward and radiates over 360 degrees, which according to Cabasse filters out noise, attenuates internal standing waves and makes the distance to the walls matter less. The filters are developed with the Cabasse anechoic chamber protocol, which takes measurements on axis and all around the speaker in a full circle to manage directivity and the total power radiated. The method is Cabasse's HDSE approach (Homogeneous Distribution of the Sonic Energy), aiming for direct and reflected output that match each other.
Pairing
Cabasse offers dedicated floor stands for its bookshelf models in matt black and matt white, with a design that hides the cables and carries speakers up to 50 kg. For a home cinema setup, the MC170 range can combine two Antigua MC170 or Jersey MC170 with the Socoa MC170 centre, which uses two 13 cm woofers, and the Orion MC170 subwoofer with a 21 cm driver and 200 W of power.
Alternatives
The Cabasse Bora is a three-way bookshelf model that pairs a BC13 coaxial midrange tweeter with a 21 cm Duocell woofer.
