The A300 Pro is an active bookshelf speaker system from AirPulse, the high-end brand of the Edifier group, sold at about USD 1,999 to 2,299 per pair and appearing around 2020 to 2021. It replaced the A300, raising the amplifier power for each woofer and adding an improved woofer and a deeper cabinet. The system combines a horn-loaded ribbon tweeter, DSP crossover, digital inputs and a wireless link between the two speakers.

Key specs that matter

A horn-loaded aluminium ribbon tweeter, listed as 50 mm by AirPulse, sits above a 6.5-inch underhung aluminium and magnesium woofer with a 50 mm voice coil and an oversized magnet. Amplification is by Texas Instruments TPA3251 Class D chips, providing 10 W for each tweeter and 120 W for each woofer, from a 150 W power supply. The system covers 40 Hz to 40 kHz with a signal to noise figure of 90 dB A-weighted or better. Inputs are USB, optical and coaxial up to 192 kHz, Bluetooth 5.0 with a Qualcomm QCC3031 chip and aptX HD, balanced XLR, RCA and AUX. Each speaker is 225 mm wide, 385 mm high and 350 mm deep, and AirPulse gives the weight as 25.6 kg.

Engineering and use context

The crossover and processing run on an XMOS xCore200 processor with a Texas Instruments TLV320AIC3268 codec, so the signal is divided digitally before each driver's amplifier. A ribbon tweeter uses a thin aluminium strip suspended in a magnetic field instead of a dome, and the horn in front of it raises efficiency and controls dispersion. Underhung means the coil winding is shorter than the gap it moves in, so all of it remains within the magnetic field during its stroke. The two speakers communicate through KleerNet wireless at 5.2 and 5.8 GHz, so no signal cable runs between them. The cabinet is built from 25 mm MDF with a 36 mm damping layer, and the internal cabling is visible through a clear panel. The finish is walnut veneer, with white also mentioned. The predecessor A300 had 80 W per channel for the woofers.

Pairing

With digital, analogue and Bluetooth inputs, the A300 Pro needs no separate amplifier or DAC, and a computer, CD transport or TV connects directly. The XLR input suits studio interfaces and preamplifiers with balanced outputs. The cabinets need sturdy stands, and a room of about 20 m2 suits their size.

The AirPulse A200 is the smaller active bookshelf model, with a 5.5-inch aluminium woofer, a horn-loaded ribbon tweeter and 10 W plus 55 W amplification per speaker.
