The VIBE BUDS 2 is a JBL true wireless earbud set that adds active noise cancelling and a Smart Ambient mode to the budget VIBE line. Smart Ambient lets the wearer set how much outside noise passes through, so conversations and traffic can be heard without removing the earbuds. The earbuds work with the JBL Headphones app, which offers preset and custom EQ, voice prompts in multiple languages, plus five calming background tracks in Relax Mode. Black, turquoise, pink and white versions are shown by JBL, and the case uses a compact oval shape with a flip lid.

Key specs that matter

Every earbud carries an 8.0 mm dynamic driver. The quoted bandwidth is 20 Hz to 20 kHz, an impedance of 16 ohm, a sensitivity of 110 dB SPL at 1 kHz and a maximum SPL of 95 dB. Playback reaches up to 10 hours on one charge when ANC is off and up to 8 hours with ANC active, while the case holds three further full charges for a total of 40 hours with noise cancelling off. Each earbud weighs 4.5 g and the case weighs 35 g.

Engineering and use context

Two microphones in each earbud, four in total, pick up the voice for calls, rated at -38 dBV/Pa at 1 kHz. Talk time is up to 6 hours with noise cancelling off and 5.5 hours with it on. The earbuds carry an IP54 rating against water and dust, while the case is rated IPX2. Each earbud contains a 49 mAh lithium-ion cell at 3.85 V, and the case has a 550 mAh cell at 3.8 V. A full charge takes 2 hours over USB Type-C at 5 V and 1 A, and a ten-minute charge adds three hours of playback. The earbuds measure 21.6 x 15.8 x 20.4 mm and the case 68.9 x 26.7 x 37 mm. Bluetooth 5.3 is used, with A2DP V1.4, AVRCP V1.6.2 and HFP V1.8 profiles, in the 2.4 to 2.4835 GHz band at under 13 dBm EIRP. JBL gives 45 degrees Celsius as the maximum operating temperature.

Pairing

Multi-point connection keeps the earbuds linked to a pair of Bluetooth sources simultaneously, for example phone plus tablet, with switching between them, and up to eight devices can be stored in memory. Built-in Fast Pair for Android and Swift Pair for Windows give single-tap connection with Android phones and Windows computers. Packed with the earbuds and their case are a Type-C lead and silicone tips in three sizes, along with the usual safety and warranty paperwork.

JBL's original VIBE BUDS is the earlier true wireless model in the same line, sold before this noise-cancelling second version.
