The VARIATIONS is a Moondrop tribrid in-ear monitor that mixes three driver technologies in each shell - one dynamic driver, two balanced armatures and two electrostatic tweeters. It launched at USD 520 and was later listed at USD 599, and the tuning follows Moondrop's VDSF target response.
Key specs that matter
Impedance is 15.2 ohm and sensitivity is 118 dB per Vrms. The overall frequency response spans 9 Hz to 40 kHz, with an effective range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz, and THD+N stays below 1 percent at 1 kHz. The nozzle measures 6.5 mm in diameter. Standard 0.78 mm two-pin connectors attach a coaxial cable of 6N high-purity single-crystal copper, and the cable uses interchangeable termination plugs in three formats - 3.5 mm single-ended, 2.5 mm balanced and 4.4 mm balanced.
Engineering and use context
Low frequencies come from a 10 mm dynamic driver with an LCP diaphragm. The midrange is covered by two balanced armatures customised for Moondrop by Softears, and two Sonion high-performance electrostatic drivers take the treble. A three-way crossover divides the signal between these groups so that each technology works only in its assigned band. Moondrop lists low non-linear distortion and a highly consistent phase response across the full frequency range among the design goals, which matters when three unlike driver types have to hand over to one another at the crossover points. The housing is 3D printed from medical-grade resin with an integrated filter cavity, and its ergonomic ear cavity is formed by high-precision printing to match the shape of the outer ear. The sand-blasted stainless steel face panel is polished by hand.
Pairing
As an easy load, the VARIATIONS gets loud enough from a small USB dongle as easily as from a dedicated portable player. The swappable plugs remove the need for adapters - the single-ended plug suits phones, laptops and dongles, while the two balanced plugs match the outputs found on many portable players and desktop headphone amplifiers. Because the plug is changed rather than the whole lead, the same coaxial copper conductors stay in use whichever output is chosen, and an amplifier stage with minimal output resistance leaves the three-way crossover behaving as Moondrop tuned it. Standard sockets mean third-party cables fit as well.
Alternatives
The Moondrop Psyche is a ten-driver in-ear model pairing a dual dynamic bass module with four armatures and four planar tweeters, supplied with a balanced cable.
