The TUNE 660NC is a Bluetooth on-ear model made by JBL with active noise cancelling, part of the budget TUNE family and introduced in 2020. It streams over Bluetooth 5.0, can also be used with a detachable audio cable when the battery runs down, and folds flat for travel. Fast Pair by Google is built in, so the headphone links to an Android device as soon as it is switched on. Buttons on the ear cup handle volume, tracks, calls and voice assistant access, and JBL offers several colour options, including black, blue, pink and white finishes.
Key specs that matter
Both cups carry a 32 mm (1.26 in) dynamic driver. JBL states a frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz, an impedance of 32 ohm and a sensitivity of 100 dB SPL at 1 kHz and 1 mW, with a maximum SPL of 96 dB. Battery life depends on mode - up to 55 hours with Bluetooth only, up to 44 hours with Bluetooth and noise cancelling on, and up to 35 hours when the cable is used with noise cancelling active. The weight is 166 g, or 0.366 lb.
Engineering and use context
Inside sits a polymer lithium-ion cell rated 610 mAh at 3.7 V, which refills from empty in under two hours over USB Type-C, with a 5 V, 1 A supply rating. A five-minute top-up gives two further hours of playback. Bluetooth profiles are A2DP v1.3, AVRCP v1.5 and HFP v1.6, operating in the 2.402 to 2.480 GHz band. Two microphones are fitted, and the call microphone has a sensitivity of -42 dBV at 1 kHz per pascal. Each ear cup measures 7.3 x 7.3 cm outside and 1.7 cm deep, and multi-point connection is supported. JBL lists 45 degrees Celsius as the highest operating temperature. The box contains the headphone, a USB Type-C charging cable, an audio cable, a quick start leaflet plus the warranty and safety documents. With the analogue cable plugged in, the noise cancelling circuit can still run from the battery.
Pairing
As a Bluetooth headphone it needs no amplifier and pairs directly with any phone, tablet or PC that supports Bluetooth audio. The HFP profile allows hands-free calls from a paired phone, and the ear-cup button calls up the phone's voice assistant. The supplied audio cable lets it plug into sources lacking Bluetooth, for example an aircraft seat socket or a desktop headphone output, and its low impedance is easy for almost any analogue output to drive.
Alternatives
JBL's TUNE 500 is the wired on-ear model of this family, using a fixed flat cable, an inline remote and no battery or noise cancelling.
