JBL's Tune 510BT is a Bluetooth on-ear model from the entry Tune series, built around a foldable frame and a USB-C charging port. JBL presents it as a grab and go model with multipoint Bluetooth, hands-free calling and direct access to Siri or Google Assistant from a button on the ear cup. JBL announced it with a USD 49.95 price and availability on its own site from March 14, 2021, in black, blue and white. In that range it sat above the in-ear Tune models at USD 39.95 and below the Tune 660NC noise cancelling model at USD 99.95.

Key specs that matter

Two 32 mm dynamic drivers are used. JBL gives a frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz, an impedance of 32 ohm, sensitivity of 103.5 dB SPL at 1 kHz and 1 mW, and a maximum SPL of 95 dB. The lithium-ion battery of 450 mAh at 3.7 V lasts up to 40 hours of music with Bluetooth on. A full recharge takes 2 hours, and a 5 minute top-up adds about 2 hours of playback. Weight is 160 g. The power supply rating is 5 V and 1 A.

Engineering and use context

The wireless link is Bluetooth 5.0 with the A2DP 1.3, AVRCP 1.6 and HFP 1.7 profiles, operating in the 2.4 GHz to 2.4835 GHz band with transmitted power below 8 dBm and GFSK, pi/4 DQPSK and 8DPSK modulation. The microphone for calls has a sensitivity of -29 dBV at 1 kHz per pascal. Buttons on the ear cup control volume, playback and calls. The ear cushions are soft and the headband padded, and the headphone folds flat for carrying. Its highest permitted operating temperature is 45 degrees C. The model has no wired input and no active noise cancelling.

Pairing

Multipoint lets the headphone hold two Bluetooth sources, so a video on a tablet can give way to an incoming call on a phone without re-pairing. The multi-function button wakes the native voice assistant of the connected device, Siri on Apple products or Google Assistant on Android, without unlocking the phone. The speed charge feature and the multipoint link were both listed by JBL at launch as headline features of the whole four-model Tune update of 2021. Delivered in the box are the headphone, a charging lead with USB-C, a QSG leaflet and warranty and warning sheets. The USB-C cable serves only for charging.

Alternatives

The JBL Tune 520BT succeeded it as the Bluetooth 5.3 on-ear model of the series, rated for up to 57 hours of playback.
