The Starfield II is a one-driver IEM made by Moondrop, the Chinese company known for tuning its models to its own VDSF target response. It is the second generation of the Starfield and introduces a new driver with a lithium-magnesium alloy dome. Its zinc alloy shell carries the space-themed faceplate for which the Starfield line is known.

Key specs that matter

In each shell sits a 10 mm dynamic driver with a lithium-magnesium alloy dome composite diaphragm. Frequency response is 12 Hz to 24 kHz in free-field measurement, and effective response is 20 Hz to 20 kHz at -3 dB. Sensitivity is 122 dB/Vrms at 1 kHz, impedance is 15 ohms within 15% and THD is 0.08% or less. The earpieces use 0.78 mm two-pin connectors, and the cable ends in a 3.5 mm single-ended plug. The shell is zinc alloy with a brass nozzle, and each earpiece weighs about 11 g.

Engineering and use context

Lithium-magnesium alloy is lighter than beryllium, allowing a stiff dome without extra mass. Moondrop uses it for the dome of a composite diaphragm, keeping the cone material elsewhere, which raises bandwidth and suppresses resonance. The pressure vent uses an off-centre diversion structure designed to counter the effect of the vent's closeness to the concha, which can otherwise change the bass. A bass booster plug is supplied for listeners who want more sub-bass, fitted to the vent. The zinc alloy shell is solid and heavy, and the brass nozzle is CNC-milled with a gold-plated finish and easily replaceable acoustic filters. The stock cable is silver-plated, with a star-twisted structure intended to reduce interference, and its colour matches the shell. The two-pin cable connection is standard across the industry, so the stock cable can be replaced with a balanced version or one with a microphone, or the earpieces can be fitted to Bluetooth neckbands and true wireless ear-hooks. The package includes a storage bag, a manual, a certificate and three sizes of silicone eartips. Response changes noticeably with different eartips, so tip choice is part of setting up the Starfield II. The low 15 ohm impedance means the output impedance of the source affects the balance, so a source with low output impedance suits it best.

Pairing

Swapping to a balanced two-pin cable allows use with 4.4 mm outputs.

Alternatives

Moondrop's Starfield is the original model of the line with a 10 mm carbon nanotube diaphragm and 32 ohm impedance.
