The Moondrop Solis is a hybrid in-ear monitor that combines balanced armature and electrostatic drivers in each shell. It was released on 12 December 2019 at a price of USD 1,099.99, and Moondrop states that the tuning aims at the signature of traditional electrostatic earphones. Every unit is handmade by skilled technicians, and the shells were offered in black and in a clear version.
Key specs that matter
Six drivers per side are arranged as two electrostatic units and four balanced armatures. Treble comes from two Sonion EST electrostatic drivers of Danish origin. The midrange is handled by two Softears D-MID-A balanced armatures, custom units made for Softears, and the bass by two Sonion 37 Series balanced armatures that share an extra cavity. Impedance is 7.5 ohm plus or minus 15 percent at 1 kHz and sensitivity is 120 dB per Vrms at 1 kHz. Moondrop specifies a response of 20 Hz to 45 kHz in free field at -3 dB, with an effective range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz measured to IEC60318-4. A removable lead plugs into each shell with a 0.78 mm two-pin connector.
Engineering and use context
Moondrop calls the arrangement a 2EST plus 4BA composite structure, in which every driver pair is dedicated to one part of the spectrum - electrostatic units at the top, Softears armatures in the middle and Sonion armatures at the bottom. Giving the two bass armatures one shared extra cavity is the approach Moondrop chose for the low range. The shell design is inspired by the gold foil of the Sun God Bird excavated at the Jinsha site in Chengdu, Sichuan province. Production of each pair involves dozens of separate procedures and more than ten hours of precision knife moulding. The supplied cable uses LITZ 4N purity oxygen-free copper conductors. The package holds the earphones, the lead, a pouch for storage, an adapter for aircraft sockets, three pairs of silicone tips (S, M and L), a certificate and a manual.
Pairing
The Solis presents a low-impedance load to its source. The included aircraft adapter allows connection to in-flight entertainment systems, and because the two-pin connector is a common standard, the stock LITZ lead can be swapped for other two-pin cables with different plugs.
Alternatives
The Moondrop Solis II is the successor in-ear model, built as a tribrid with 2DD, 2BA and 4EST drivers per side.
