The JBL Quantum 400 is a USB over-ear gaming headset from the Quantum line, built around a game-chat balance dial, a flip-up boom microphone and customisable RGB lighting on the ear shells. It was one of seven headsets JBL presented on January 6, 2020, at CES in Las Vegas when it launched its first gaming range, alongside the Quantum 100, 200, 300, 600, 800 and Quantum ONE, and the range went on sale from April 2020. It can also run from a plain analogue cable, which widens the list of compatible platforms beyond the PC.
Key specs that matter
Two 50 mm dynamic drivers cover 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Impedance is 32 ohm, sensitivity is 98 dB SPL at 1 kHz for 1 mW and maximum input power is 30 mW. The microphone capsule measures 4 mm by 1.5 mm, uses a directional pattern, spans 100 Hz to 10 kHz and has a sensitivity of -40 dBV at 1 kHz/Pa. Two cables come in the box - a 1.2 m 3.5 mm audio lead and a 3 m Type-C to Type-A lead. The headset weighs 274 g.
Engineering and use context
On PC the bundled JBL QuantumENGINE software drives JBL QuantumSURROUND, a personalised virtual surround mode, and the headset also supports DTS Headphone X version 2.0. The same dashboard stores separate profiles, programs the RGB effects, changes microphone settings and offers a custom equalizer or six presets. The game-chat balance dial on the ear cup blends game audio against voice chat without leaving the game, and it is certified by DISCORD while also working with TeamSpeak and other chat platforms. The voice focus boom mic, which has echo cancelling, flips up to mute itself automatically and switches back on when lowered, and a separate mute control is provided. JBL fits a lightweight band over the head and PU leather-wrapped memory foam around the ears for long sessions. A foam windshield for the microphone is supplied.
Pairing
Over USB the Quantum 400 works with PC, PS4, Nintendo Switch and Mac, and this is the connection that unlocks the surround processing and lighting on a computer. On the analogue lead it acts as a conventional headset for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, smartphones, Mac and VR systems. QuantumSURROUND is limited to PC regardless of connection. The moderate impedance suits controller jacks and phone outputs without a separate amplifier.
Alternatives
JBL's wired Quantum 300 keeps the same driver size and flip-up mic but drops the RGB lighting and chat dial, connecting by analogue jack with a USB adapter.
