The Pill is an open-ear wireless earphone from Moondrop that clips onto the outer ear instead of sealing the ear canal, sold under model number MD-OWS-003. It was introduced on 22 May 2025 at USD 49.99 in three colour options, and it takes its name from the clear charging case, which is shaped like a medicine capsule.

Key specs that matter

The driver in each earpiece is a 13 mm dynamic driver with a compressed fibre diaphragm, which Moondrop describes as a long-stroke wideband unit with very high efficiency and a low natural frequency. The listed frequency range runs from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. The wireless link uses Bluetooth 6.0 with the A2DP, AVRCP, HFP and HSP profiles, the SBC and AAC codecs and a working distance of 10 m in open space. With AAC active, the earpieces play for 8 hours and the case adds 20 more, for 28 hours in total. Standby reaches over 35 hours on the earpieces and 90 hours for the case. The cells are rated 3.7 V and 40 mAh per earpiece and 300 mAh in the case, which takes 5 V at 1 A over USB-C and needs about 1.5 hours to refill. Both units carry an IPX4 rating against splashes and sweat.

Engineering and use context

An open design cannot rely on a seal for bass, so Moondrop combines an oversized rear cavity with a patented adaptive algorithm for low-frequency boost and offers three bass settings. A dipole directional transmission layout points the output toward the ear canal and cuts leakage to people nearby. Tuning follows the VDSF target adapted for open earphones and measured on a B&K 5128 head and torso simulator. The C-shaped bridge combines TPU and titanium alloy inside shape memory silicone, so it flexes to fit different ears. The earpieces are not assigned to a side - either one can be worn on either ear and dropped into either slot of the case. Calls go through a microphone backed by NPU hardware-level AI noise reduction, and a 55 ms low-latency game mode shortens the delay between picture and audio.

Pairing

Dual-device pairing keeps two sources linked at once, so the Pill can move between a phone and a computer without re-pairing. The MOONDROP Link app toggles features, runs a one-click automatic EQ and opens a parametric equalizer through the second-generation online interactive DSP. As codec support stops at AAC, there is no LDAC or aptX mode to choose on Android sources. The box holds the earpieces in their case, a charging cable plus the usual manual, certificate and service card.

Alternatives

The Moondrop U.C.T.S., model MD-OWS-014, is the other open-ear design in the range, using hybrid dual drivers and adding LHDC-V support.
