The MOCA is a true wireless in-ear headphone from Moondrop, positioned as the successor to the company's earlier NEKOCAKE earbuds. Moondrop describes its design as following the classic ten principles of good design, aiming for practicality, simplicity and comfort, and the MOCA combines a driver developed by Moondrop's own R&D team with active noise cancelling and a feature set usually found in pricier models.
Key specs that matter
Moondrop fits a 10mm dynamic driver with a titanium nitride (TiN) ceramic composite dome diaphragm. Bluetooth 5.4 supports SBC, AAC and the LC3 codec, with the A2DP, AVRCP, HFP and HSP profiles and a range of around 10 metres. Hybrid active noise cancelling is rated at up to 40dB, and a transparency mode is included. Battery life is about 6 hours from the earpieces and about 15 hours in total with the case, which charges over USB-C or wirelessly. The earpieces charge in about 1.5 hours and the case in about 2 hours. Latency in game mode is quoted at around 55 to 60ms.
Engineering and use context
The TiN ceramic coating stiffens the diaphragm dome, and the compact 10mm driver leaves room inside the shell for a photo-sensor. Moondrop chose optical wear detection over the more common capacitive type because it is more reliable, pausing music when an earpiece is removed and resuming when it is reinserted. Noise cancelling combines feedforward and feedback microphones, and the duct that feeds the external microphone is shaped using fluid-mechanics modelling to reduce wind noise, a physical rather than purely software solution. If one earpiece is removed while noise cancelling is active, the other switches automatically to transparency mode. LC3 is the low-power, low-latency codec of Bluetooth LE Audio, which Moondrop supports for stable, efficient transmission on compatible phones. The frequency response is tuned to follow Moondrop's VDSF target. Touch controls can be customised, and the earbuds reconnect automatically to the last device. The package includes three sizes of silicone ear tips.
Pairing
The MOCA pairs with any iOS or Android phone, tablet or computer over Bluetooth, and devices supporting LE Audio can use the LC3 codec, enabled through the MOONDROP Link 2.0 app. The app also sets the order of noise cancelling and transparency modes and delivers firmware updates. Game mode lowers latency for video and gaming on phones and tablets.
Alternatives
Moondrop's own ULTRASONIC is a closed true wireless alternative in the same range, with a longer total battery life from its case.
