The MMX 150 is a gaming headset with closed-back over-ear cups from beyerdynamic of Germany, and the name covers two generations. The first MMX 150, released in November 2021 at USD 149, was a wired model with USB and analogue connection only. The current MMX 150 wireless adds a battery and Bluetooth, and it is listed in Europe at EUR 179. It comes in Arctic White or Black.

Key specs that matter

Each cup of the wireless version holds a 40 mm driver, and beyerdynamic quotes a frequency response of 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. Runtime reaches up to 50 hours on one charge, and 15 minutes on the charger adds roughly 5 hours of use. The headset weighs 336 g without cable. The circumaural pads are filled with memory foam and covered in velour, and the headband has a fontanelle recess that takes pressure off the top of the head.

Engineering and use context

Voice pickup is handled by the detachable META VOICE boom microphone, and a sidetone function returns a portion of the microphone signal to the ears so speech level can be judged during chat. Settings such as sidetone level, personal EQ curves, presets and voice prompts are adjusted in the beyerdynamic app. A cable connection works with PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and smartphones, while Bluetooth covers PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and smartphones, so Xbox owners need the wire. The original wired MMX 150 used a dynamic driver of the same size rated 5 Hz to 30,000 Hz at 32 ohm, weighed 304 g and came with a 1.2 m USB-C to 3.5 mm cable plus a 2.4 m USB-C to USB-A lead, both fabric-covered. Its cardioid capsule measured 9.9 mm and shipped with a popscreen. An Augmented Mode used two outer microphones to let ambient noise through, while a single control wheel with an LED ring sat on the left cup.

Pairing

For PC and console play the wireless MMX 150 needs no amplifier, since its own electronics drive the cups over Bluetooth, while a plain analogue cable connection serves consoles that lack a suitable wireless link. A phone can stay paired so calls and playlists continue when the player leaves the desk. The wired generation relied on the USB connection for its controls and Augmented Mode, so owners of that version get the full feature set only when it is plugged into a computer.

Alternatives

The beyerdynamic AVENTHO 100 is a foldable wireless on-ear model with active noise cancelling and up to 60 hours of battery life.
