The DT 1770 PRO MKII is the updated version of the closed-back studio headphone from beyerdynamic, made by hand in Germany at the company's Heilbronn headquarters. It is aimed at tracking, monitoring and editing, where the closed cups keep headphone sound from leaking into microphones. Compared with the first version, impedance has been cut from 250 ohm to 30 ohm so that the headphone can be driven by a much wider range of sources.

Key specs that matter

The newly developed TESLA.45 driver is 45 mm in diameter. Sensitivity is 95 dB SPL at 1 mW and 500 Hz, which beyerdynamic also gives as 110 dB at 1 V. Frequency response runs from 5 Hz to 40,000 Hz. Without a cable attached the headphone weighs 377 g, and the circumaural cups enclose the ears fully rather than resting on them.

Engineering and use context

Inside the TESLA.45 driver, a neodymium magnet reaches a flux density above one Tesla. The diaphragm is made from PEEK polymer, and the voice coil uses aluminium-coated copper wire. Each driver is measured several times during production to keep pairs within tight tolerance. The cable is detachable and locks into a 3-pin mini-XLR socket on the left cup, and the box contains two versions - a 3 m straight cable and a 5 m coiled cable, both ending in a 6.35 mm stereo jack. Two sets of ear pads are supplied - velour for comfort over long sessions and leatherette for stronger isolation from outside noise. The headband combines spring steel with memory foam and a fontanelle recess that reduces load on the crown during long sessions. The yokes and other parts are anodised metal, and pads, cables and other components can be replaced to extend service life. A hard carrying case is included for transport between studios. Because the cable, pads and headband cushion are all separate parts, a studio can keep spares on hand and service several pairs without returning them to the factory, and the two pad types can be swapped in seconds depending on whether comfort or isolation matters more for a given session.

Pairing

The low impedance lets the headphone run from audio interfaces, mixing desk headphone outputs, laptops and portable players without a dedicated amplifier, though a desktop headphone amplifier remains an option. The coiled cable gives a performer room to move in a live room, while the straight one is tidier at a desk.

Alternatives

The beyerdynamic DT 1990 PRO MKII uses the same TESLA.45 driver in an open-back housing intended for mixing and mastering.
