The Melomania P100 is the first over-ear headphone in the Melomania range from Cambridge Audio, a family that also includes the A100 earphones. Announced on 3 July 2024, it is a closed-back wireless model with active noise cancelling, launched at GBP 229, EUR 279 and USD 279 in black or white. Cambridge Audio fitted it with the same class of amplification it uses in its CX series hi-fi amplifiers, and a revised SE edition arrived later.

Key specs that matter

Inside the earcups sit custom 40 mm drivers using neodymium magnets and a three-layer composite diaphragm of PEEK, PU and PEEK. A Class AB amplifier stage drives the transducers. Bluetooth 5.3 with Qualcomm Snapdragon Sound supports aptX Lossless for CD-resolution wireless playback without lossy compression, along with aptX Adaptive up to 24-bit and 96 kHz, AAC and SBC. The battery is rated for up to 60 hours with noise cancelling on and up to 100 hours with it off. Five minutes on the charger adds 2 hours of use with ANC active or 4 hours without it, and a full charge takes under 160 minutes. The headphone weighs 330 g, and a cable connection through USB-C or a 3.5 mm jack is available as an alternative to Bluetooth.

Engineering and use context

Hybrid adaptive noise cancelling is used, with three user-selectable settings - full ANC, transparency mode and off. Five microphones are fitted in total, two of them handling calls with Qualcomm cVc echo cancelling and noise suppression. The Melomania Connect app provides a seven-band equaliser, six genre presets, firmware updates and a gaming mode that cuts latency to 80 ms. The earcups use memory foam covered in faux leather, and the clamping force was tested across a range of head sizes. Owners can swap the battery and the ear cushions themselves. The housing uses 50% recycled plastic, and the product ships in fully recyclable, plastic-free packaging.

Pairing

Source devices that support Snapdragon Sound can use the aptX Lossless link, while other phones, tablets and computers use aptX Adaptive, AAC or SBC according to their own codec support. Over the USB-C cable the P100 connects digitally to a computer or phone, and the analogue cable lets it plug into the analogue headphone output of a portable player or a home amplifier. The low-latency gaming mode suits video and games on a tablet or console with Bluetooth audio.
