The JBL LIVE 770NC is a circumaural Bluetooth set featuring True Adaptive ANC. It is the over-ear counterpart to the on-ear LIVE 670NC and uses full earcups around the ear with a fabric headband.
Key specs that matter
A 40 mm dynamic driver sits in each earcup. JBL quotes 20 Hz to 20 kHz in Bluetooth mode and 20 Hz to 40 kHz when used over the analogue cable. Impedance is 32 ohm, sensitivity is 100 dB SPL at 1 kHz and the maximum level reaches 95 dB SPL. JBL gives 65 hours of streaming at most without noise cancelling, 50 hours with it, and 40 hours when the wireless link is off and only ANC works. Calls last up to 33 hours without ANC and 28 hours with it. An 850 mAh lithium-ion cell at 3.7 V needs 3 hours from empty on a 5 V 1 A USB-C supply, and 5 minutes of charging returns 4 hours of music. Weight is 256 g.
Engineering and use context
Bluetooth 5.3, whose transmitter stays under 10 dBm and modulates in GFSK, pi/4-DQPSK and 8-DPSK, carries A2DP 1.4, HFP 1.8 and AVRCP 1.6.2, with LE Audio promised later via an over-the-air update. Separate Audio and Video modes trade playback quality against lip sync for movies and games. The adaptive noise cancelling uses four noise-sensing microphones, and Smart Ambient lets outside sounds through so the wearer can hold a conversation. Two beamforming microphones pick up the voice on calls, rated at -40 dBV per Pa at 1 kHz. JBL Spatial Sound turns any stereo source into virtual surround. The headphone keeps two Bluetooth devices connected through multi-point, pauses when removed and restarts when worn, and reaches Alexa or Hey Google by hotword or an earcup tap. Automatic pairing with nearby Android and Windows devices is supported, and Google Finder can help trace a misplaced headphone. Maximum operating temperature is 45 degrees C.
Pairing
Supplied items are the headphones, a removable analogue lead, a Type-C lead for charging, a warranty sheet and a quick start guide. The JBL Headphones app is used to adjust the ANC, change headphone behaviours and set up spatial modes, while Personi-Fi 2.0 creates a custom profile after a quick hearing test. Soft ear cushions and a textured headband in earthy shades are part of the design, and a carrying pouch protects the headphone in a bag.
Alternatives
The JBL LIVE 660NC is an earlier over-ear model with Adaptive Noise Cancelling, Bluetooth 5.0 and a 265 g weight.
