JBL Safe Sound caps the maximum volume under 85 dB, and the company states that the headphone is built from child-friendly, safe materials meant to resist damage and breakage. A built-in microphone, a detachable audio cable and multi-point Bluetooth complete the package.

Key specs that matter

Both earcups use 32 mm dynamic drivers, and JBL specifies a range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz, an impedance of 32 ohm, a sensitivity of 92 dB SPL at 1 kHz and a maximum SPL of 81 dB. The headphone weighs 200 g. Power comes from a lithium-ion polymer cell rated 450 mA at 3.7 V and gives up to 20 hours of music with ANC switched on or up to 30 hours with it off. A full recharge takes under 2 hours from empty.

Engineering and use context

Noise cancelling is meant to help children stay focused on music, shows or online lessons. The built-in microphone, rated at -27 dBV at 1 kHz/Pa, lets kids talk with friends, family or teachers. JBL describes the controls as simple enough for even the youngest users, and the fit is tuned for smaller ears and heads. Holding the power button for 2 seconds switches the headphone on and connects it, a button press toggles ANC, and further presses call up Siri, Bixby or another voice assistant. A 5 second hold after power off re-enters pairing mode, and a separate 5 second hold performs a factory reset. Indicator lights report ANC status, Bluetooth connection, charging, full charge and low battery. Bluetooth 5.0 carries HFP 1.6, AVRCP 1.5 and A2DP 1.3 profiles, operating from 2.4 to 2.4835 GHz with transmitter power below 10 dBm and GFSK, pi/4 DQPSK and 8DPSK modulation. The power supply is specified at 5.0 V and 1.0 A, and the maximum operating temperature is 45 degrees C. Colour choices include blue, pink and white.

Pairing

Multi-point connection lets the JR 460NC switch quickly from one Bluetooth device to another with a maximum of two devices, and Google Fast Pair links it immediately to Android 6.0 or later devices, with further devices paired by a tap on their screens. For wired use, the 3.5 mm audio cable of 1.0 m length plugs into sources without Bluetooth and keeps the headphone working when the battery is empty. The box also contains a Type-C charging cable, a warranty and warning leaflet plus the safety sheet and quick start guide.
