The HPH-MT8 is a studio monitor headphone in the Yamaha MT Series, a range the company links to the lineage of its NS-10M, MSP and HS studio monitor speakers. Yamaha says decades of know-how from building professional and high-end studio equipment went into the design of every acoustic component, and aims the model at recording, mixing, live mix monitoring and checking tracks on the move.
Key specs that matter
The design is closed-back and circumaural. Each side uses a 45 mm dynamic driver with a CCAW voice coil and a neodymium magnet. Yamaha specifies a frequency response of 15 Hz to 28 kHz, sensitivity of 102 dB/mW and impedance of 37 ohm at 1 kHz, with maximum input power of 1600 mW at 1 kHz. Dimensions are 161 x 214 x 89 mm and weight is 350 g, both without cable and plug. Two detachable cables are supplied - a 1.2 m coiled lead and a 3.0 m straight lead - each with a 3.5 mm stereo plug, plus a threaded gold-plated 6.3 mm adaptor and a padded carrying bag.
Engineering and use context
CCAW stands for copper-clad aluminium wire, meaning aluminium wire coated in copper, which Yamaha uses to keep the voice coil light. According to the maker, the arms and ear cups were designed to eliminate extraneous resonance. The housing is solid ABS, the support arms are die-cast aluminium and the headband is sweat-resistant, while the arms fold for transport. Large ear pads use protein-skin leather over low-resistance cushions that absorb excess vibration, and Yamaha points to reduced leakage as the reason they suit studio recording and live mix monitoring. A three-dimensional arm pivot and a highly adjustable slider let the pad angle match the head, and moveable earcups allow single-ear monitoring. The plugs on both cables are gold-plated to resist corrosion. The designers state that the MT line continues the approach of Yamaha studio monitor speakers, and that the MT7 was the first model of the series to be released, carrying a tuning forks mark at the centre of its design.
Pairing
The mini plug plus threaded adaptor allow direct connection to phones and laptops as well as to professional audio gear such as consoles, audio interfaces and rack headphone amplifiers. The short coiled lead suits a desk or portable source, while the long straight lead gives more reach where the listener needs to move around.
Alternatives
Yamaha also offers the HPH-MT7, a closed-back monitor headphone in the same series that the maker aims at studio mixing and recording as well as live mix monitoring.
