The Yamaha HPH-MT5 is a closed-back, circumaural studio monitor headphone from Yamaha's professional audio range, intended for recording, mixing and tracking sessions where the closed shell keeps sound from leaking into microphones. Yamaha also offers it in white as the HPH-MT5W. It sits below the HPH-MT8 in the MT series and is designed around fatigue-free comfort over long working hours as well as an accurate balance faithful to the source.

Key specs that matter

Inside each cup Yamaha fits a 40 mm dynamic unit whose CCAW (copper-clad aluminium wire) voice coil is driven by a neodymium magnet. The stated range is 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Sensitivity is 100 dB/mW, impedance is 51 ohms at 1 kHz, and maximum input power reaches 1600 mW at 1 kHz. The headphone weighs 245 g and measures 165 x 203 x 88 mm. It connects through a detachable 3.0 m straight cable ending in a 3.5 mm stereo plug, with a threaded, gold-plated 6.3 mm adapter supplied.

Engineering and use context

Yamaha designed all acoustic components to eliminate extraneous resonances, and the custom drivers were tuned with that aim. Its sealed rear shell gives strong isolation from surrounding noise, which matters when a performer tracks next to open microphones. Adjustable slider length together with a three-dimensional arm pivot construction lets the headband follow different head shapes, and low-resistance ear cushions reduce clamping pressure during long sessions on the ears. The earcups are movable, so an engineer or DJ can swivel one away for single-ear monitoring. The housing is made of thick, durable ABS and the arms fold, which shrinks the headphone for transport in the supplied nylon carrying bag. The package holds the headphone, the straight cable, the threaded adapter and the bag, and the lead is detachable so a spare can be fitted.

Pairing

Being easy to drive, the HPH-MT5 runs from audio interfaces, mixing consoles, portable recorders and laptops, while a dedicated headphone amplifier gives more level headroom. The mini plug fits mobile devices directly, and the screw-on adapter serves the larger jacks on studio equipment and hi-fi amplifiers.

Alternatives

The Yamaha HPH-MT8 is the step-up closed-back monitor with 45 mm drivers, 37 ohm impedance, a 15 Hz to 28 kHz range and both coiled and straight cables.
