The HPH-MT5W is the white-finished version of the HPH-MT5, the entry model of the Yamaha MT Series of studio monitor headphones. Yamaha positions it for work in the studio, for music production at home and for personal listening, and ties the series to the design approach of its NS-10M, MSP and HS studio monitor speakers.

Key specs that matter

The MT5W uses closed-back circumaural cups and 40 mm dynamic drivers with CCAW voice coils. Yamaha quotes a frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz, sensitivity of 100 dB/mW and impedance of 51 ohm at 1 kHz. The drivers accept up to 1600 mW of input power at 1 kHz. The headphone measures 165 x 203 x 88 mm and weighs 245 g, both figures given without the cable and plug. A straight 3.0 m cable ends in a 3.5 mm stereo plug, and a threaded gold-plated 6.3 mm adaptor and a nylon carrying bag are supplied.

Engineering and use context

Yamaha describes the MT Series as intended for the demanding requirements of professional studio and monitoring applications, with a sturdy build meant to survive road use. On the MT5W the housing is made of thick ABS plastic, and the arms fold, which the maker presents as suited both to tough working environments and to travel. Smooth synthetic leather and low-resistance cushions cover the ear pads. A three-dimensional arm pivot combined with slider length adjustment allows the cups to follow the shape of the head, which Yamaha links to reduced fatigue over extended sessions. The earcups can be moved so that one ear stays uncovered for single-ear monitoring. Yamaha specifies the closed-back construction to keep outside noise away from the listener.

Pairing

With the standard mini plug and the screw-on adaptor, the MT5W connects directly to portable players, computer audio interfaces and the larger jacks found on mixing consoles and studio headphone amplifiers. The long lead gives room to move around a control room or a home desk setup without an extension cable. Yamaha describes the straight lead as suitable for many applications. Elsewhere in the MT Series, the HPH-MT7 and HPH-MT7W are pitched at mix monitoring in live performance for their high sound pressure levels and durability, while the MT5 and MT5W target the studio, home production and personal use.

Alternatives

Within the same Yamaha studio headphone range, the HPH-MT8 steps up to 45 mm drivers and a quoted range of 15 Hz to 28 kHz.
