The FoKus Rex5 is a wireless earbud model from Noble Audio, the American company best known for custom and universal in-ear monitors. It brings a multi driver hybrid layout of the kind found in the brand's wired models into a wireless earbud with active noise cancellation. The launch price is USD 449.
Key specs that matter
Each earpiece contains five drivers. A 10 mm dynamic driver covers the bass, a 6 mm planar driver is added, and three balanced armature drivers complete the set. Noble quotes a frequency response of 20 Hz to 40 kHz. The earbuds use Bluetooth 5.4 with multipoint connection, and supported codecs include aptX Adaptive and LDAC. Battery life is up to 7 hours without ANC and up to 5 hours when ANC is active, while the charging case adds between 18 and 25 hours depending on use. A 15 minute quick charge gives about 2 hours of playback. Battery capacity is 45 mAh in each earbud and 500 mAh in the case, and a full charge takes 1.5 hours for the earbuds and 2 hours for the case.
Engineering and use context
The platform is built on the Qualcomm QCC3091 chip, which has onboard memory for storing equalisation profiles inside the earbuds themselves. That matters for the Audiodo personalisation feature, which runs a hearing calibration and builds a profile tailored to the listener. Once saved, the profile follows the earbuds to any phone or computer they are paired with rather than staying in one app. Beyond active noise cancellation, an ambient hear-through setting passes surrounding noise to the ear on demand, and a separate native noise reduction system works on the microphones during calls. The earpieces are made from aluminium and acrylic, and the charging case is also aluminium and supports wireless charging on a standard pad. Combining a planar driver with dynamic and balanced armature units is unusual in a true wireless format, and it shows how Noble has carried over its approach from wired in-ear monitors.
Pairing
The earbuds work straight from the phone, with no external DAC or headphone amplifier in the chain. For the most from the hardware, the source should be an Android phone or player that supports LDAC or aptX Adaptive, since other devices fall back to basic Bluetooth codecs. Multipoint lets the earbuds hold connections with two devices, for example a handset plus a notebook, at once.
Alternatives
The Noble Audio FoKus Prestige Encore is a further cable free Noble earbud, with a three way hybrid driver design, Audiodo personalisation, noise cancellation and multipoint Bluetooth.
