The EAH-TZ700 is a wired in-ear monitoring earphone from the Panasonic-owned Technics brand, designed around a newly developed free-edge magnetic fluid driver. It sits at USD 1,199.99 on the Technics United States price list and comes in a graphite black finish.
Key specs that matter
A 10 mm dynamic driver sits in each housing, and the stated frequency response spans 3 Hz to 100 kHz measured with the cord. Impedance is 37 ohm and sensitivity is 102 dB per mW, with power handling of 100 mW to IEC. Each earpiece weighs approximately 7 g without the cord and approximately 22 g with it. Cables attach through gold-plated MMCX connectors, and the standard cord ends in a 3.5 mm stereo mini plug.
Engineering and use context
The diaphragm is 5 microns thick and combines a high-strength special aluminium material that suppresses unwanted vibration with a supple free-edge material around its rim. Technics assigns the aluminium part to high-frequency reproduction and uses the free edge to lower the lowest resonance frequency of the driver. Magnetic fluid sits in the voice coil gap, where it keeps the stroke of the soft-edged diaphragm accurate and supplies a strong damping effect, a combination the company describes as previously difficult to achieve. Because the fluid supports the diaphragm at two points, the circumferential edge and the inner voice coil, edge rigidity can be reduced while the moving parts stay stable, which allows greater amplitude and better transient response. Technics later adapted this driver, first developed for the TZ700, to its true wireless range, which required the driver to be miniaturised. Inside the unit an Air Control Chamber governs the internal airflow to balance the output across the frequency bands. The housing mixes two metals - titanium for the port section and diecast magnesium for the main body. Two detachable cables of approximately 1.2 m are included, one unbalanced and one balanced, and the general-purpose MMCX connection leaves room for other cables. The kit also holds normal and oval earpieces in sizes S, M, L and XL, plus a carrying case.
Pairing
Since its impedance and sensitivity make it easy to drive, the EAH-TZ700 can run from smartphones, portable music players and headphone amplifiers on a desk. The supplied balanced cable suits players and amplifiers with a balanced headphone output, while the unbalanced cable with its mini plug covers standard sockets. Amplifier output fed into the earpieces should stay within the IEC power rating.
Alternatives
For DJ use, the Technics EAH-DJ1200 is a wired on-ear headphone with 40 mm drivers and 270 degree swivelling earcups.
