The ARIA2 is the second generation of Moondrop's single-dynamic ARIA in-ear monitor, priced at USD 99.99. It changes the diaphragm, magnetic system and shell material compared with the earlier ARIA models, and it ships with a cable that accepts interchangeable plugs so the same lead can serve a single-ended or a balanced source. Two colour versions are offered, a red one with a new electrophoresis finish and a blue one named Starlight Blue.
Key specs that matter
Moondrop rates sensitivity at 122 dB per Vrms at 1 kHz, a figure tied to input voltage rather than to power, and gives impedance as 33 ohm plus or minus 15 percent at 1 kHz. Total harmonic distortion is listed at 0.05 percent or lower at 1 kHz. The frequency response range of 16 Hz to 22 kHz is quoted under IEC 61094 in free field conditions, while the effective range, taken at the minus 3 dB points on an IEC 60318-4 coupler, is 20 Hz to 20 kHz. The shells connect through the widely used 0.78 mm two-pin interface.
Engineering and use context
Its single driver has a newly developed composite diaphragm with a spherical dome and a TiN ceramic coating, which Moondrop says it produces in a two-step process involving three different materials. It sits in the brand's patented dynamic driver structure with a large, long-stroke symmetrical magnetic circuit and an acoustic cavity resonance control system. The zinc alloy shells are cut on high-precision CNC machines and held together by custom screws instead of adhesive, and the nozzle is milled from brass on CNC machines and then gold-plated. At the nozzle tip is an acoustic filter that can be detached and replaced. The cable combines copper and silver-plated conductors in a Litz structure. In the box are the earphones, the cable, a 3.5 mm single-ended plug, a 4.4 mm plug, ear tips, a storage case and a user manual. The earphones carry a one-year warranty and the cable three months.
Pairing
Given its modest drive demands the ARIA2 can run from a phone output, a compact USB converter or a pocket music player, no extra amplifier being required. The supplied balanced plug lets the same cable connect to a balanced output on a player or desktop amplifier, while the single-ended plug covers ordinary headphone sockets.
Alternatives
The Moondrop ARIA SNOW EDITION is the earlier single-dynamic model of the line, with a 10 mm driver, a DLC composite diaphragm and a 32 ohm rating.
