The 105 SILVA is a wired open-back headphone with walnut ear cups from Meze Audio, the company that industrial designer Antonio Meze founded in 2011 in Baia Mare, Romania, under the original name Meze Headphones. It went on sale on 23 July 2025 at USD 499 or EUR 499. Meze positions it between two existing models, combining the engineering of the 109 PRO with the voicing of the 105 AER, and it shares the driver of the latter while swapping its polymer cups for wood.

Key specs that matter

The transducer is a 50 mm dynamic driver whose diaphragm pairs a carbon fibre-reinforced cellulose composite dome with a titanium-coated semicrystalline polymer surround. Impedance is 42 ohm and sensitivity is 112 dB SPL per mW at 1 kHz, with a frequency range of 5 Hz to 30 kHz and total harmonic distortion below 0.1 percent at 1 kHz. The headphone weighs 354 g. The ear cups combine walnut wood with PC-ABS, and the cable plugs into each cup through a separate 3.5 mm TS jack.

Engineering and use context

The split between a stiff composite dome and a softer coated surround lets the centre of the diaphragm move as a unit while the outer ring handles the excursion. An open-back cup lets the rear wave of the driver escape through the radial grille, which Meze sets into the walnut so that the grille pattern and the wood grain form one surface. The styling takes cues from Mid-Century Modern design. Comfort comes from plush velour pads and a self-adjusting headband that sets the fit without sliders. Compared with the 105 AER, the wooden cups add 18 g. The supplied lead is a 1.8 m dual-twisted OFC cable wrapped in Kevlar, with anthracite aluminium plug shells and a mini-jack at the source end. The box also includes a gold-plated 6.3 mm adapter, a 3.5 mm to USB-C adapter with an integrated DAC and amplifier, a cable pouch and a hard EVA carrying case. Being open, the SILVA leaks sound in both directions, so it suits a quiet room at home and not a commute or an office.

Pairing

The USB-C adapter lets the headphone play straight from a phone or laptop without a separate device. Given its easy load, a portable player or a desktop headphone amplifier drives it to high levels, and the detachable dual-entry cable can be exchanged for a balanced lead where the amplifier has a balanced output.
