The ToneWinner AT-2900 is a nine-channel AV receiver built in China by Guangzhou Tonewinner Electronics, running firmware written by the company's own engineers. It decodes 14 channels and has three subwoofer outputs, so it may also act as a front end for larger layouts with external amplification.
Key specs that matter
Tonewinner quotes 10 Hz to 20 kHz (+1/-3 dB), distortion of no more than 0.03 percent, an A-weighted SNR figure of 89 dB minimum and whole-unit gain of at least 37 dB. The decoder reads Dolby Atmos and TrueHD plus DTS:X and DTS Master. An HDMI section of 6 in and 2 out with HDMI 2.1, HDCP 2.2, eARC and CEC carries 4K at 60 Hz, full RGB colour sampling and 18 Gbps, with HDR10 and Dolby Vision. The receiver measures 428 x 521 x 160 mm and weighs 15.8 kg.
Engineering and use context
Supported layouts range from 2.0 and 5.1.2 through 7.1.6 and 9.1.4 to 7.3.6 and 9.3.4, and volume can be set separately for every channel, each of the three subwoofers included. DSP processing can turn stereo and conventional multichannel material into a 3D presentation when a source lacks Atmos or DTS:X. Easy Test EQ, developed by Tonewinner, offers automatic and manual acoustic tests that compensate speaker distance, delay and level, and each input keeps its own EQ settings. Rear connections cover four analog inputs, two coaxial and two optical ones, USB audio from a PC with support for DTS 5.1, USB drives and memory cards with FLAC, APE, WAV and MP3 playback in multi-level folders, and a built-in wireless receiver. RS232, IR input and a 5V trigger output allow system control. An app and an on-screen menu handle setup, and song lists appear on both phone and TV. The mains supply is switchable between 110 V and 230 V. Supplied accessories include the remote control, batteries, an HDMI cable, an audio cable, speaker wire and a manual. Tonewinner states that the firmware and software use original source code covered by its own patents.
Pairing
Nine amplified channels cover a 7.1.2 or 5.1.4 layout on their own, and a trio of sub outputs lets several powered bass units share the low end. For 9.3.4 or 7.3.6 the AT-2900 needs an extra power amplifier for the additional channels.
Alternatives
The ToneWinner AT-3000 is an AV receiver from the same range with eleven amplified channels.
