The Power-XR belongs to the XR series from Cyrus Audio, and Cyrus calls it the best performing stereo power amp Cyrus currently builds, with high current efficiency as a design goal. It was launched in 2023 together with the Classic POWER, with pre-orders opening in November of that year for December delivery and a UK price of GBP 2,995. The half-width case is 75 mm tall, 215 mm wide and 355 mm deep, with a weight of 7.3 kg.

Key specs that matter

Cyrus rates it at 2 x 87 W into 8 ohms, 2 x 110 W into 6 ohms and 2 x 144 W into 4 ohms. THD+N is below 0.002% at 1 kHz and two thirds power into 6 ohms. Input sensitivity for full power into 6 ohms is 450 mV on the RCA input and 900 mV on the XLR input, and input impedance is 28 kilohms. The minus 3 dB point sits at 100 kHz, and unweighted signal to noise ratio exceeds 100 dB. The circuit is Class A/B, and Cyrus designed it for high current delivery so that demanding speakers can be driven.

Engineering and use context

Cyrus calls the power supply over-specified - a 408VA toroidal transformer feeds a high capacity internal supply. A socket on the back links it to the optional PSU-XR external supply, which contains five independent regulated supplies - a logic supply for digital circuits, two fixed voltage supplies for low voltage analogue stages and two variable high capacity supplies. The PSU-XR draws under 0.5 W in standby and up to 750 W at most, and with it connected the rating rises to 121 W per channel into 6 ohms. The rear panel carries unbalanced inputs with a daisy-chain output, balanced inputs, a 12 V trigger input, an MC-BUS connection for control integration with other Cyrus components and a firmware upgrade port. Standby consumption is low, and the amplifier can be switched in and out of standby over MC-BUS or the trigger input. There is no bridged mono mode.

Pairing

The topology matches that of the Cyrus integrated amplifiers, which the company says allows a matched result when one of them is used together with a Power-XR in a bi-amped system. Thanks to the daisy-chain output, a second Power-XR can be linked for bi-amping, and a Cyrus preamplifier or integrated can switch it on automatically. The current capability suits floorstanding speakers in a 20 m2 room.

Alternatives

The Cyrus Classic POWER is the lower-priced stereo power amplifier launched alongside it, with the same power ratings and case size but a response quoted to beyond 50 kHz.
