The Classic POWER is a stereo power amplifier from Cyrus Audio, made in England and built into a die-cast chassis of the Classic series. Cyrus states that it set out to make a clear step up from earlier Classic amplifiers by applying what the company learned while developing its XR Series. It is fed from a preamplifier or streamer through RCA or XLR inputs, and Cyrus gives two years of cover against defects.

Key specs that matter

All figures are quoted as RMS with both channels driven. Output is 87 W per channel into 8 ohm, 110 W into 6 ohm and 144 W into 4 ohm. THD+N is below 0.002% at 1 kHz and two-thirds power into 6 ohm, and unweighted signal-to-noise exceeds 100 dB. The frequency response reaches from below 0.5 Hz to above 48 kHz at the -3 dB points. Input sensitivity for 110 W into 6 ohm is 450 mV on RCA and 900 mV on XLR, with an input impedance of 28 kOhm. The case is 75 mm high, 215 mm wide and 355 mm deep, with a weight of 7.3 kg. Standby consumption stays under 0.5 W, with a maximum draw of 750 W.

Engineering and use context

A 408 VA toroidal transformer feeds a high-capacity supply. A rear socket accepts the external PSX-R2 power supply, whose output is routed internally to the voltage amplifier stage, and its connection is detected automatically. A rear toggle switch selects between the balanced XLR inputs, which are the default, and the unbalanced RCA inputs. A Chain output feeds the incoming signal to additional Cyrus power amplifiers for bi-amping or tri-amping, and it works with either input type. Cyrus notes that all of its power amplifiers and the power stages of its integrated amplifiers share the same voltage gain, so mixed Cyrus systems need no gain setting. MC-BUS sockets link standby control with other Cyrus units, and a 12V trigger input on a 3.5 mm jack does the same with a home cinema receiver. Speaker cables must be terminated with the supplied dual speaker plugs rather than separate 4 mm plugs. The standby indicator also reports overheating, overload or a short circuit at the outputs, and the feet are height-adjustable.

Pairing

Cyrus names the Classic STREAM as a source that can drive it directly, provided the streamer output is set to variable. Bi-amping requires loudspeakers with bi-wirable terminals.
