The Klimax Twin is the stereo member of the Linn Klimax power amp family, made by the Scottish company and listed from USD 13,550. It combines two channels of the patented Linn Chakra amplification with a Dynamik power supply inside an enclosure machined from solid aluminium, available in a silver or black anodised finish. Machined fins on the casework aid cooling, and the unit belongs to a Linn power amplifier range that also includes the Klimax Solo 800, the Klimax Solo 500 and the Akurate models.
Key specs that matter
Maximum output is 111 W per channel into 8 ohm and 200 W per channel into 4 ohm, with a maximum input power of 1000 W. The rear panel carries two WBT RCA phono inputs and two balanced XLR inputs, and there is no passthrough output. Loudspeakers connect through four WBT terminals, usable as binding posts or with banana connectors. The low-profile case measures 350 mm in width, 60 mm in height and 355 mm in depth, and the amplifier weighs 9 kg.
Engineering and use context
Chakra is the amplifier topology Linn has patented. It pairs a monolithic chip, used for its speed and precision at low currents, with bipolar transistors that take over at higher current levels, and the circuit constantly adapts between the two. Linn states that this approach gives high power, reliability and efficiency with less heat and distortion than conventional designs. The Dynamik supply is one of the switch-mode designs Linn has built in-house for decades, intended to give stable, low-noise power in a compact package with strong isolation from mains-borne noise. Inside the solid enclosure the audio and power supply boards are kept electrically and mechanically isolated from each other, and the machined casework itself acts as a heat exchanger. Automatic signal sensing puts the amplifier into sleep mode when no audio is present to cut power consumption, while fault detection protects against short circuits and excessive loads.
Pairing
A single Klimax Twin is intended for a passive stereo system. Additional units can be added to multi-amp a pair of loudspeakers, or to move to externally amplified Exakt operation in combination with the Klimax Exaktbox, where each drive unit gets its own amplifier channel.
Alternatives
Linn also offers the Akurate 2200, a two-channel Chakra power amplifier with a Dynamik switch-mode supply with the same rated output into 8 ohm per channel.
