The Akurate 2200 is the two-channel model in the Akurate power amplifier family from Linn of Glasgow, Scotland, which also includes the three-channel 3200 and the four-channel 4200. The range appeared with a first-edition owner's manual dated May 2007, and Linn built every version around Chakra output circuitry first used in its Klimax 500 Twin. Each model comes as an unbalanced version with RCA sockets or a balanced version with XLR connectors, and the current finishes are silver and black.
Key specs that matter
Rated output is 111 W rms per channel into 8 ohm and 200 W rms into 4 ohm, with maximum mains draw of 300 W. The current chassis measures 380 mm wide, 91 mm high and 380 mm deep and weighs 6.4 kg. The 2007 manual quotes harmonic distortion below 0.005 percent, a bandwidth of 1.4 Hz to 41 kHz, a peak output voltage of 41 V and stability into all loudspeaker loads. Input impedance is 7.5 kohm for the RCA version and 7.8 kohm for XLR, and the amplifier clips at 1.1 V rms on RCA and 2.2 V rms on XLR. Default gain is 28.6 dB unbalanced or 22.6 dB balanced. Standby draw is 16 W on RCA models and 17.5 W on XLR models, and the mains input covers 100 to 120 V or 220 to 240 V automatically.
Engineering and use context
In the Chakra topology a monolithic amplifier chip supplies all output while current stays below a few amperes, and above that level an array of large bipolar transistors takes over most of the load, leaving the chip to correct errors. Linn says the arrangement shortens the signal path and produces much less heat than conventional designs. Power comes from a Dynamik switch-mode supply that replaces a heavy transformer and isolates the audio circuits from mains-borne noise. Each channel can be converted for AKTIV operation by fitting a Linn AKTIV crossover module, and a per-channel gain control should stay at its default unless such a module is fitted. Over-current and over-temperature protection shuts the affected channels down and restarts them automatically. Signal sensing brightens the blue front LED when music arrives and returns the unit to low-power standby after about 20 minutes of silence. Linn asks for at least 10 cm of free space above and at both sides.
Pairing
Each channel has its own line output next to the input, so the signal can be passed to another amplifier or a subwoofer, and Linn describes this as a way to daisy-chain amplifiers for bi-amping. The binding posts accept bare cable and spade terminations, or work as sockets for 4 mm banana plugs. When several Akurate amplifiers are used together, the manual prefers placing them side by side rather than stacked.
