The CI PA4-60 is a compact four-channel power amplifier module from NAD for custom installation and distributed audio systems. It delivers its total continuous power through NAD's DirectDigital amplification, and it can be reconfigured as a higher-power two-channel amplifier when a zone calls for it. Its case is 1U high and one third as wide as a rack, so three units fit side by side to provide up to 12 channels in a single rack space.
Key specs that matter
In four-channel mode each channel is rated at 60 W into 4 or 8 ohms. In two-channel mode the output rises to 120 W per channel, which lets the module drive a single pair of stereo speakers. IHF dynamic power is 200 W into 8 ohms and 300 W into 4 ohms. NAD lists noise at -102 dBA and THD+N at 0.005%. Each input has a gain potentiometer covering -6 to +6 dB. Inputs are two stereo RCA pairs with gain controls and a stereo or mono selector, and outputs are one stereo RCA pre-out plus two speaker outputs on 4-pin snap-on Phoenix 5.08 mm connectors that accept wire up to 12 AWG. A 12 V trigger input and output are fitted. The unit measures 146.5 x 44 x 384 mm and weighs 2.35 kg, with a shipping weight of 3.35 kg.
Engineering and use context
Dynamic Load Management detects whether one or two pairs of speakers are connected and routes power to the matching two-channel or four-channel configuration. Thermostatically controlled front-to-back cooling lets up to three units sit one above another in a rack without overheating or loss of performance. The ChassisLink mounting system joins units together without tools and simplifies fitting them into the rack. The universal power supply accepts 100 to 240 V AC, and the specified operating range is 0 to 40 degrees C. The finish is black. The load-invariant output is designed to handle long speaker cables and difficult speaker loads, and Dynamic Power Management removes the need for traditional bridging. It belongs to the NAD Custom Install Modular Series. Supplied accessories include 120 V and 230 V power cords, short rack ears that double as wall brackets, and long rack ears. Power can be switched by the front-panel button, the trigger or signal sensing, and LEDs report input activity and output temperature or protection warnings.
Pairing
The RCA loop output allows one source to be passed on and distributed across several channels or several modules. This lets a single streamer or control system feed a whole bank of linked CI PA4-60 units in a central rack.
Alternatives
When a single chassis with more channels is preferred, NAD's CI 980 provides eight channels in a 2U rack-mount housing.
