The AD-1PA+ is presented by Guangzhou Tonewinner Electronics as a Hi-Fi stereo power amplifier offering Class A, Class AB and automatic modes. Switching between the three can be done with the remote control, and the maker lists four ways to use it - one amplifier with one pair of speakers, a preamp with one amplifier, a preamp with two amplifiers, or one amplifier running two pairs of speakers.
Key specs that matter
The nominal 8 ohm load is described as adaptive down to 4 ohms, and damping factor exceeds 200 into 8 ohms. Input sensitivity is 1.6 V for rated power into 8 ohms, fed through one stereo pair of single-ended RCA sockets or one of balanced XLR sockets. THD is 0.008% or less at 1 kHz. Frequency response covers 10 Hz to 100 kHz within +1/-3 dB. Noise is rated at no less than 108 dB A-weighted on the balanced input and at least 115 dB on the unbalanced input. Gain is 29.5 dB plus or minus 1 dB, and channel separation is 80 dB or better. Its aluminium enclosure is 444 mm across, 294 mm tall and 449 mm deep, offered in black or silver.
Engineering and use context
A full balance layout uses symmetric differential inputs with a differential BTL output. Energy comes from a 1200 W toroidal transformer and 16 electrolytic filter capacitors totalling 180,000 uF, which Tonewinner says remove 99.9% of supply noise. Output devices are eight pairs of Toshiba TTC5200/TTA1943 audio transistors, 16 pieces able to deliver 120 A of current, each pair screened and matched to 99.8% precision. Consumption is 260 to 300 W in Class A or 70 to 110 W in Class AB. Tonewinner's patented power management brings standby draw to 0.5 W or less. Each function area has its own compartment to lower mutual interference and improve separation between channels.
Pairing
The maker recommends the AD-1PRE+ preamplifier decoder and the TY-1CD laser CD player as partners, with floorstanding speakers from its TD range completing the system. Speaker outputs can be switched between A, B and A+B, and a trigger input and output tie power-up to other units. Supply voltage is covered from 110 to 240 V AC at 50 or 60 Hz. Suggested uses are a living room or a demo room, and a power cord comes in the box.
Alternatives
Apart from the AD-1PA and this AD-1PA+, Tonewinner builds no two-channel power amplifier, so its closest alternative is the AD-3240PA, a 3-channel home cinema power amplifier.
