The 5510 Power Amplifier is a mono power amplifier from Exposure Electronics, the British company that added it to its 5510 Series to partner the existing 5510 preamplifier, in a series that also contains the 5510 Integrated Amplifier. Used as a pair with that preamplifier, the monoblocks form a three-chassis amplification system that Exposure places at the top of its current range. The UK price is GBP 7,300 per pair including VAT, with black as the finish.
Key specs that matter
Each unit is rated at 200 W into 8 ohms and 370 W into 4 ohms. Input impedance is 75 kohm at 1 kHz on the unbalanced input, and the frequency response reaches -3 dB at 52 kHz, referenced to 1 kHz. Total harmonic distortion is quoted below 0.015 percent at 1 kHz and 200 W into 8 ohms, dropping below 0.005 percent at 1 kHz and 100 W into the same load. The signal-to-noise ratio exceeds 120 dB A-weighted when referenced to 200 W into 8 ohms, or 100 dB A-weighted when referenced to 1 W into 8 ohms. Height is 115 mm, width 440 mm and depth 300 mm, and each amplifier weighs 14 kg.
Engineering and use context
A large custom-made toroidal transformer feeds screw-terminal smoothing capacitors in the power supply. The circuit uses bipolar transistors throughout, with a fully DC-coupled topology, and Exposure states that the design is engineered to handle difficult, low-impedance loudspeaker loads. According to the company, every part of the design works to reduce noise and improve stability. Protection comes from a non-invasive overload circuit together with a thermal trip. Signal can arrive over a balanced XLR input or an unbalanced RCA input, and the bi-wire loudspeaker outputs use shrouded 4 mm sockets. The casework is all aluminium and is intended to control resonance. Exposure backs the amplifier with a three-year manufacturer guarantee.
Pairing
The natural partner is the Exposure 5510 Pre-Amplifier, which offers six line-level inputs, XLR plus RCA outputs and a 99-step relay-controlled volume system. That preamplifier accepts optional MM, MC or DS Audio optical phono modules and a plug-in DAC option, so record and digital sources can be added inside the same series.
Alternatives
Within Exposure's mono power amplifier range, the 5010 Mono Power Amplifier from the earlier 5010 Series is the other model to consider.
