The Exposure 5010 Mono is a DC-coupled monoblock power amplifier from the 5010 series, the top range of the British maker, launched in 2018 together with the 5010 preamplifier. It took over from the MCX models and is smaller than they were, so stereo use calls for two chassis. The front panel carries nothing but a power button, with casework finished in titanium or black.

Key specs that matter

Rated output is 200W RMS into 8 ohms and 370W into 4 ohms. Input impedance is 75k ohms at 1kHz on the unbalanced input, and response is 3dB down at 52kHz. THD is below 0.015% at 200W into 8 ohms and below 0.005% at 100W. Signal to noise is above 120dB A-weighted referred to full power, and above 100dB referred to 1W. Consumption stays under 800VA, the case measures 115 x 440 x 300 mm and weighs 14 kg.

Engineering and use context

An 800W toroidal transformer feeds dual rectification and two 10000uF screw-terminal reservoir capacitors. The input and second stages are cascode circuits powered from active rail smoothing, which improves linearity and power supply rejection. Eight bipolar power transistors form the output stage and drive two sets of 4mm speaker sockets. Relays switch between the balanced and unbalanced inputs, so the amplifier can sit after preamplifiers with either type of output. Component choices include Welwyn RC55 resistors and polypropylene and polystyrene capacitors in the signal path. A slow start circuit limits the inrush current when the large transformer of the power supply is switched on.

Pairing

The natural partner is the 5010 preamplifier, which has six relay-switched line inputs, balanced outputs and a DC-coupled design. Its fascia is equally sparse, with only a power switch, one input selector knob and a volume control, and its output uses servo-based coupling. Its own 200W transformer with fast rectifiers and 24 smoothing capacitors keeps its supply separate from the monoblocks. Optional plug-in boards for the preamplifier provide phono amplification for MM or MC cartridges, or a DAC that accepts PCM up to 192kHz/24 bit and DSD64 through USB and BNC inputs. At launch the pair of monoblocks was priced at 4550 GBP and the preamplifier at 2000 GBP.
