The PASSION IA350A is a stereo integrated amplifier that carries its own converter from the French company YBA, belonging to the Passion line that also includes the CD430 player, the CDT450 transport and the PH150 phono stage. It was designed in France and built by Shanling, sold in the UK for GBP 4,500, and now appears among YBA's discontinued models, succeeded by the Passion IA350 MKII.

Key specs that matter

Rated output is 115 W per channel into 8 ohm and 160 W per channel into 4 ohm. On the analogue side there are two RCA inputs, labelled CD and Video, plus one balanced XLR input. Five digital inputs are listed - I2S on an RJ45 socket, AES/EBU, coaxial, USB and iPod, the latter through a USB-A port - and they accept sampling rates of 32, 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4 and 192 kHz at 24 bits. A Crystal Semiconductor converter chip decodes PCM at up to 24 bits and 192 kHz. YBA specifies signal-to-noise better than 95 dB, THD+N under 0.03% and a frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz within 0.5 dB. The case measures 430 x 380 x 108 mm and the unit weighs 15.4 kg.

Engineering and use context

YBA fits a linear supply whose UI-core transformer rating is 320 VA. The front panel stays minimal, with a large source dial on the left, a volume dial on the right stepping through eighty indicated positions and an OLED display of adjustable brightness in an oval window that glows amber-rose when the amplifier is on, and the rear panel uses toggle switches. The power switch is hidden beneath the front left edge of the two-tone aluminium case, which stands on three feet. A rear switch shuts down the digital section, so the amplifier can run as a purely analogue design when no digital source is playing. The Video input can be reconfigured to bypass the volume control, and there is a coaxial digital output as well. A full-function remote control with a metal body is supplied.

Pairing

Speaker terminals take spades, bananas or bare wire, and the power ratings cover loudspeakers of either common nominal impedance. The RCA line output and pre-out bypass allow an active subwoofer, active loudspeakers or an outboard power amp to join the system. Transports and CD players can use the AES/EBU, coaxial or I2S inputs, and a computer connects through the USB-B socket.
