The Ovation A 6.3 is an AVM integrated amplifier with digital inputs and a DAC, part of the Ovation line of the German manufacturer based in Malsch near Karlsruhe. Its US price is USD 14,990. It shares its power stage with the A 8.3, but uses a transistor preamplifier where the A 8.3 has a tube preamp stage, and it combines high-current MOSFET output stages with digital inputs, Bluetooth and a Class A headphone amplifier.
Key specs that matter
Output is 200 W per channel into 8 ohms and 330 W into 4 ohms, from Class A/AB high-current MOSFET stages with 20 transistors per channel. The layout is dual mono, the input stages are DC-coupled and the power supply uses a 1,000 VA toroidal transformer. The DAC decodes PCM up to 32 bit and 384 kHz and DSD128 over USB, and Bluetooth 4.2 is included. Analogue inputs are one XLR and four RCA, and digital inputs comprise optical, coaxial and USB. Outputs are variable XLR and RCA pre-outs, a fixed line output, two pairs of speaker terminals and a 6.3 mm headphone jack. The chassis measures 430 x 130 x 355 mm and weighs 22 kg. There is no phono stage.
Engineering and use context
MOSFET output transistors can deliver high currents and are used here in large numbers to share the load and handle low-impedance speakers. The dual mono layout keeps the two channels separate from the power supply onward. The headphone amplifier works in Class A. A parametric loudness function raises bass and treble at low volume, the tone controls can be switched out, and an AV bypass input fixes the gain for use with a home cinema processor. Input sensitivity can be adjusted for each source and inputs can be renamed on the blue display. The RC 3 remote is made entirely of aluminium, and the amplifier is supplied in a flight case. Finishes are silver or black, with AVM's Cellini finish on request. No network streaming is included, so a separate streamer connects to the digital inputs.
Pairing
With its high-current output, the A 6.3 drives demanding floorstanders. Vinyl requires a separate phono preamplifier, and a network streamer or CD transport connects through the digital inputs. A powered subwoofer or an additional power amplifier can run from the pre-outs, and the fixed line output feeds a recorder or headphone amplifier.
Alternatives
The AVM Ovation A 8.3 is the sister integrated amplifier with the same power output and a tube preamplifier stage.
