The L-509Z Black Edition CENTENNIAL is a 100th Anniversary Limited Edition integrated amplifier from Luxman, based on the L-509Z. The edition is finished in black instead of the usual silver aluminium, and was part of a Centennial system of four components limited to 100 sets worldwide, 50 of them for North America. It includes a phono stage with one MM and two MC settings, a balanced line input, tone controls and main-in and pre-out connections, and comes with the RA-17A remote control and a power cable.
Key specs that matter
Rated output is 120 W per channel into 8 ohm and 220 W per channel into 4 ohm. Line sensitivity is 180 mV at 47 kohm, and the balanced line input takes 180 mV at 79 kohm. Main-in needs 1.1 V at 47 kohm. The phono section offers MM at 2.5 mV and 47 kohm, MC-H at 0.3 mV and 100 ohm, and MC-L at 0.1 mV and 40 ohm. Phono response is 20 Hz to 20 kHz within 0.5 dB, and the line response runs 20 Hz to 100 kHz within -3 dB. Distortion is 0.007% or less at 1 kHz and 0.03% or less from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, both into 8 ohm. Signal to noise is 106 dB or more on line, 87 dB on MM, 70 dB on MC-H and 62 dB on MC-L. The damping factor reaches 330.
Engineering and use context
The two MC settings split cartridges by output and impedance, so both low and high output moving coil designs can be matched. This is the first Luxman integrated in which both the preamplifier and power sections use independent modules of the LIFES 1.0 feedback engine, each in a fully discrete layout. Volume runs through the LECUA-EX attenuator. Its power section is built from bipolar devices in a three-stage Darlington, four-parallel push-pull layout. The bass control gives 8 dB of adjustment at 100 Hz. Treble adjustment of 8 dB is available at two turnover points, 760 Hz and 10 kHz. A 1 V pre out lets the preamplifier section feed another power amplifier, and the main-in allows the power stage to be driven by an external preamplifier. Speaker terminals accept Y-lug connectors. The chassis measures 440 x 193 x 463 mm and the weight is 29.4 kg. Power consumption is 390 W in operation, 150 W at idle and 0.5 W on standby, with versions for 230 V at 50 Hz and 115 V at 60 Hz.
Pairing
Its output nearly doubles into lower loads, so difficult speakers with impedance dips are within its range. Turntable owners can connect MM cartridges as well as both higher and lower output moving coil types directly, so an outboard transformer is unnecessary.
Alternatives
The Luxman L-507uXII is a lower-powered integrated from the brand, rated at 110 W into 8 ohm and 210 W into 4 ohm per channel.
