The I35 is the full-size modular integrated amplifier of the Primare 35 series from Sweden, supplied in purely analogue form. Primare lists it at EUR 3,800, and in the UK the base model sold for GBP 3,200 in 2018. Two plug-in boards can be added later - the DM36 digital to analogue converter module and the SM35 Prisma network player module - which turn the same chassis into the I35 DAC or I35 Prisma configurations.

Key specs that matter

Power output is 150 W per channel into 8 ohm and 300 W into 4 ohm, and the amplifier is specified to work into loads down to 2 ohm. Sources connect through two balanced XLR stereo inputs with 30 kOhm input impedance and three RCA stereo inputs at 15 kOhm. Two RCA stereo outputs are provided, a fixed LINE output and a variable PRE output. Frequency response is quoted as 20 Hz to 20 kHz within 0.2 dB, and Primare gives an S/N figure above 100 dB with the AES17 filter. The chassis is 430 mm wide and 106 mm high, with a depth of 420 mm including knobs and connectors or 382 mm without them, and it weighs 11 kg, with black and titanium finishes.

Engineering and use context

Primare's UFPD label is short for Ultra Fast Power Device. Each module is arranged as a balanced configuration of four discrete amplifiers, two per channel, and UFPD 2 is Primare's reworking of its earlier all-analogue Class-D UFPD technology. Primare states that the rated output holds linearly across the entire audible bandwidth. The DM36 is sold on its own at EUR 900 and the SM35 at EUR 550. Primare's design brief follows the Swedish notion of lagom, aiming for simple controls and clear functionality in a restrained front panel that avoids clutter. Volume is set in steps from 0 to 99, and the menu allows a maximum volume limit and the mute behaviour to be configured.

Pairing

System control runs through the C25 IR remote, IR in and out jacks on 3.5 mm plugs, a 3.5 mm 12V trigger output and an RS232 port for outboard control. Within the 35 series the I35 is matched in width by the CD35 disc player, the DD35 CD transport and the R35 phono stage. Fitting the DM36 later adds four optical inputs, two coaxial inputs and a USB-B computer input, and fitting the SM35 adds Ethernet, Wi-Fi and the Prisma app.
