The I25 DAC DM36 is a full-width modular integrated amplifier from Primare of Sweden that combines the I25 analogue platform with the DM36 digital to analogue converter module. Primare lists it at EUR 3,600, and the platform can later take the SM35 Prisma network player module, priced at EUR 550, without replacing the amplifier.

Key specs that matter

Output is 100 W per channel into 8 ohm and 200 W into 4 ohm from UFPD 2 amplification, which Primare describes as linear across the entire audible bandwidth. Analogue sources connect through five RCA stereo inputs, and there are two RCA outputs, a fixed LINE pair and a variable PRE pair. The DM36 module adds four Toslink and two coaxial inputs, each accepting up to 192 kHz and 24 bit, plus a computer-facing USB-B socket that handles up to 384 kHz and 32 bit and DSD256 (11.2 MHz). One RCA socket carries a digital output. The chassis measures 430 x 106 x 420 mm, weighs 11 kg and is offered in black or titanium.

Engineering and use context

The name UFPD abbreviates Ultra Fast Power Device and describes a Class-D topology that stays analogue throughout, and UFPD 2 is Primare's reworked second generation of it. The DM36 is built around an ESS ES9068A chip and replaced the earlier DM35 module. The module includes a PCM up-sampling option that, when enabled, converts 16 bit 44.1 kHz and 24 bit 48 kHz material to 24 bit 88.2 kHz and 24 bit 96 kHz respectively. MQA processing works with Prisma and Primare CD sources, and with a Prisma module installed the final MQA unfold is performed for Tidal Masters files. The digital output rate for analogue sources can be set to 48 or 96 kHz. The DM36 is sold separately at EUR 900 and fits the I25, I35 and PRE35 platforms, so an owner of the analogue I25 can arrive at this configuration by fitting the module later. With the SM35 added, the amplifier gains Prisma multi-room control through a mobile app along with AirPlay 2, Chromecast built-in and Spotify Connect.

Pairing

The front control knob and the C25 IR remote handle operation, and IR input plus output sockets of 3.5 mm, a 3.5 mm 12V trigger output and an RS232 port let the amplifier work inside a controlled system. The PRE output can feed a separate power amp or powered sub, while a disc transport, TV or computer connects to the digital inputs.
