The Rotel DX-5 is a compact stereo amplifier that Rotel calls a personal audio integrated, fitted with an ESS DAC, a full-colour TFT display and a remote control in the box. Its chassis measures 215 x 76 x 251 mm, the fascia is 70 mm tall, and it weighs 4.1 kg, so it is about half the width of a standard full-size Rotel component. Rotel lists it as Roon Tested.

Key specs that matter

The Class AB power stage is rated at 25 W per channel continuous into 8 ohms and 33 W per channel maximum into 4 ohms. Rotel quotes THD under 0.03% and the same limit for IMD. The frequency response runs from 10 Hz to 100 kHz within 0.19 dB, and S/N exceeds 100 dB, IHF A-weighted. Damping factor is 140, measured from 20 Hz to 20 kHz at 8 ohms. The analogue input accepts 680 mV with an impedance of 100 kohm and an overload point of 4.2 V. Power draw is 80 W in operation and under 0.5 W on standby.

Engineering and use context

The Class AB amplifier draws its current from a high-current toroidal transformer wound in-house by Rotel. Digital conversion is handled by the ESS ES9039Q2M, a 32-bit converter chip. The PC-USB port accepts PCM up to 32-bit/384 kHz, native DSD up to 4x and DoP up to 2x, and both coax and optical connections accept signals up to 24-bit/192 kHz. An HDMI ARC connection with CEC support lets a television feed audio to the amplifier and share control commands. For wireless playback the DX-5 accepts Bluetooth with aptX HD and AAC, so phones and tablets can play to it without a cable. Analogue sources connect through RCA inputs. A 6.35 mm headphone jack sits on the unit for private listening. The compact footprint and the combination of digital, wireless and TV inputs make the DX-5 a single box for a desk or a small living space.

Pairing

An active subwoofer can be connected to the dedicated sub output alongside the main speakers, with no extra preamplifier in between. The TV can be connected directly over HDMI ARC, a laptop through the USB port and a tablet via Bluetooth, while a record deck needs an outboard phono preamplifier ahead of the RCA input, because the DX-5 connection list shows no phono stage.
