The Rotel RAS-5000 is a 17-inch-wide stereo amplifier with its own network streaming section, an ESS 32-bit DAC and aptX HD Bluetooth. It adds HDMI ARC with eARC support for a television, with a remote control supplied. Rotel announced it on November 14, 2023 in black or silver. The chassis measures 431 x 144 x 425 mm and weighs 15.7 kg.

Key specs that matter

Rotel rates the Class AB amplifier at 140 W per channel into 8 ohms and 220 W per channel into 4 ohms. THD and IMD each stay under 0.03%, and the damping factor is 290. The line input has a frequency response of 10 Hz to 100 kHz within 0.5 dB, while the digital path runs from 10 Hz to 70 kHz within 3 dB. Signal-to-noise is 103 dB for line sources and 105 dB for digital. Line input sensitivity is 0.78 V with an impedance of 46 kohm and an overload point of 4.1 V, while digital sensitivity is -8 dBfs with a 75 ohm input impedance. Bass and treble controls adjust by up to 10 dB at 100 Hz and 10 kHz. Power consumption is 380 W, dropping below 0.5 W in standby.

Engineering and use context

The streaming section supports Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, internet radio, AirPlay 2, Google Cast and Roon, so the main apps can send music straight to the amplifier without an external streamer. The USB audio input works in Class 2.0 mode up to 24-bit/384 kHz, with driver installation required on the computer, and the S/PDIF digital inputs accept LPCM up to 24-bit/192 kHz. Bluetooth reception supports the aptX HD and AAC codecs. Analogue sources connect through RCA line inputs. The amplifier section is fed by an oversized toroidal transformer specified by Rotel, and a large colour display sits on the front panel. Qobuz was also listed at launch, and MQA and MQA Studio files play at up to 24-bit/384 kHz.

Pairing

A television connects through a single HDMI cable, a computer over USB and a CD player with a coaxial or optical output over S/PDIF. Phones can stream through AirPlay 2, Google Cast or Bluetooth, and Roon users can select the amplifier directly as an output. No phono stage is listed in the specifications, so vinyl playback requires a separate phono preamplifier connected to one of the RCA inputs. With 220 W per channel available into 4 ohms, the amplifier is specified to drive 4 ohm loudspeakers.
