Shanling has released a new version of its digital-to-analog converter, the Shanling SM1.3. This variant, the Shanling SM1.3R, utilizes a proprietary 24-bit R2R module for conversion, resulting in an analog, fluid sound signature.

While the original Shanling SM1.3 was based on the Asahi Kasei AKM4499EX chip and the AK4191 pre-processor, the heart of the Shanling SM1.3R is a 24-bit R2R ladder (the same matrix used in Shanling’s flagship SACD player SCD3.3). The converter incorporates 212 resistors, each matched with a precision of 0.01%.

The Shanling SM1.3R is Roon Ready and supports Tidal Connect, Qobuz Connect, Spotify Connect, and Apple Music, Apple Classical, and Amazon Music. Shanling describes the platform as a closed Android build, which precludes the installation of arbitrary third-party applications or the use of the Google Play Store. For local playback, the device includes an internal SSD slot, with additional support for Samba and UPnP protocols.

Connectivity options on the Shanling SM1.3R include balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA analog outputs, as well as a suite of digital inputs: I2S, two coaxial, two optical, and a USB-C port. A USB-A port is also provided for connecting external storage drives. The Shanling SM1.3R can function as a standalone DAC for an existing streamer setup. The headphone output has not been overlooked either; it delivers 900 mW into 32 ohms or 130 mW into 300 ohms and is powered by a dedicated 31-watt power supply unit.

The Shanling SM1.3R network DAC is now available for purchase at a recommended retail price of $1,799 EUR.
