Tonearms — J.Sikora KV12 MAX

The KV12 MAX, also called the Zirconium Series, is J.Sikora's revised 12 inch unipivot tonearm from Poland and the successor to the original KV12. It keeps the oil-damped single-point concept and the Kevlar armtube, but changes the tube shape, bearing material, metalwork and wiring. In March 2023 the European price was EUR 12,000, and one North American importer lists it at USD 14,500.

Key specs that matter

Effective length is 304.8 mm with a mounting distance of 291 mm. Effective mass drops slightly to 12.5 g against 13 g for the first version. J.Sikora gives the mass of the arm as 250 g, with the VTA mechanism adding 225 g, and on this model precise on-the-fly VTA adjustment is standard rather than an extra. The materials list covers Kevlar, aluminium, bronze, brass and stainless steel, and the arm comes in natural yellow or lacquered black matte.

Engineering and use context

The armtube is now conical and thinner in diameter, and it is filled with a special foam that raises its stiffness while cutting weight. The main bearing is made of zirconium oxide, chosen to reduce resonances, and the bearing housing is smaller than before. Aluminium parts from the older arm were replaced with two types of bronze for greater stability, and the counterweights are also bronze, supplied in several masses. Because zirconia does not conduct, a fifth wire runs through the arm inside a very thin Teflon tube to handle grounding. Signal wiring changed from Albedo silver to 24 carat gold-plated 6N OCC copper sourced from Soyaton, terminated in RCA plugs with a separate ground lead. The headshell is a redesigned flat aluminium plate. Azimuth is set by a screw in the counterweight body, and the wire leaving the top of the bearing housing forms an arch that contributes anti-skating force alongside the small mechanism. J.Sikora states that damping, anti-skating, azimuth and VTA are all adjustable during playback.

Pairing

The deck needs a board drilled for this long-arm geometry, and the mounting position is the same as on the earlier KV12, so a board drilled for that arm can take the new one. With its effective mass the arm suits the medium compliance range typical of moving coil cartridges, and the range of bronze counterweights handles different cartridge bodies. A phono stage with RCA inputs and a ground post accepts the cable directly.

Alternatives

The original J.Sikora KV12 is the earlier version of this arm, using a cylindrical Kevlar tube, Albedo silver wiring and an optional rather than standard VTA tower.
