The VSM-1 is a surface-mount passive loudspeaker from Vandersteen Audio, the American company that builds its speakers in the USA. Vandersteen designed it first for the rear channel positions of a multi-channel audio and video system, and it also lists the model among its compact speakers as a full-range main speaker when paired with a subwoofer in rooms where larger cabinets are not practical. Pricing starts at USD 3,140 per pair.

Key specs that matter

Two drivers share one axis - a 6.5-inch mineral-filled polycone woofer in a die-cast basket and a 1-inch critically damped alloy dome tweeter cooled by ferrofluid. Vandersteen quotes 60 Hz to 21 kHz within 3 dB and a sensitivity of 86 dB at 1 m with a 2.83 V input. Nominal impedance is 8 ohm, dipping to 5 ohm at its lowest, and Vandersteen suggests amplifiers of 30 to 100 W into 8 ohm. Each speaker measures 308 mm wide, 600 mm high and only 127 mm deep, and weighs 14.1 kg net. Finish choices are black, cherry, dark oak, light walnut, maple and oak.

Engineering and use context

Because the woofer and tweeter are arranged coaxially, both drivers share the same acoustic centre, and their outputs stay time aligned and converge within a few centimetres of the cabinet. The crossover is first order at 6 dB per octave with the split at 3.5 kHz, and it uses film capacitors in the signal path, hand soldered on a double-sided plated-through circuit board. Vandersteen states that this network lets the speaker safely take the high-power low-frequency content that uncompressed and lossless surround soundtracks route to the rear channels. The cabinet is built entirely of MDF, chosen to resist vibration and keep panel resonances under control. A dedicated bracket system uses the mass of the speaker itself to hold it firmly against the wall. Speaker cable attaches at a barrier strip, where the maximum lug width is 11 mm.

Pairing

The moderate efficiency and the fairly benign load mean a home cinema receiver or a multichannel amp inside the suggested power band can drive it. As a rear pair it fits a Vandersteen surround system, where the on-wall VCC-2 three-way centre speaker is the matching front centre channel. Used as main speakers on a wall, the pair needs a subwoofer to handle the lowest octaves, and Vandersteen offers its own subwoofers in the range for that role.

Alternatives

The Vandersteen VLR Wood is the other compact model for stand or in-cabinet placement when a wall-mounted design is not wanted.
