The TD-9 is a two-way, two-driver bookshelf model from Guangzhou Tonewinner Electronics, a Chinese audio manufacturer in the Panyu District of Guangzhou that says it has more than 30 years of experience in acoustic products. In Chinese the model is known as Tongdi No. 9. Tonewinner lists it among its Hi-Fi series speakers and builds its look around a red mahogany veneer finished in several coats of piano lacquer, with rounded cabinet edges. A black grille of elastic cloth covers the front for dust protection.
Key specs that matter
The driver pair is a 1.1 inch silk dome tweeter and a 7 inch mid-bass unit, loaded by a rear-facing bass reflex port. Frequency response is 40 Hz to 25 kHz, sensitivity is 85 dB and nominal impedance is 8 ohms. The recommended amplifier power runs from 10 to 100 watts. The cabinet measures 230 x 390 x 362 mm, a single speaker weighs 12.8 kg, and a boxed pair comes to 28 kg.
Engineering and use context
The enclosure uses 21 mm medium density fibreboard with a thickened front baffle, covered by a 1 mm mahogany veneer, and the inside is lined with sound-absorbing cotton against panel vibration and standing waves. The tweeter diaphragm is a thin, soft fabric driven by a 28 mm voice coil, which the maker says gives higher power capacity and less distortion from midrange vibration, and the unit on its own extends to 28 kHz. The mid-bass cone is a corrugated pressed paper mixed with Kevlar synthetic fibre, held by a rubber surround and driven by a 42 mm copper-clad aluminium voice coil in a fully symmetrical magnet system with a shorting ring. The crossover follows a classic Butterworth layout, third order on the tweeter branch and second order on the mid-bass branch, with MKP film capacitors, single-core 5N oxygen-free copper inductors and multi-strand 5N copper internal wiring. Two pairs of 24K gold-plated OFC binding posts under clear protective sleeves allow bi-wiring or connection to two amplifiers at once. The bass reflex vent is formed as part of the all-in-one enclosure.
Pairing
The easy nominal load, moderate sensitivity and wide power rating suit a modest integrated or pre and power combination from the same maker. Tonewinner itself proposes the TY-1CD CD player feeding the AD-1PRE+ preamplifier and the AD-1PA power amplifier, and also names its AD-2SE amplifier as a match.
Alternatives
Within the same Hi-Fi series Tonewinner also offers the TD-7SE, another passive speaker designed for bookshelf placement.
