Guangzhou Tonewinner Electronics, which reports more than 30 years of acoustic product design and manufacturing, makes the TD-7SE, a passive two-driver design for shelf or stand use. The model belongs to the Hi-Fi series of the Tonewinner catalogue and is finished in a bright, pure black paint with rounded cabinet edges and a chamfered front panel.

Key specs that matter

Tonewinner quotes a power rating of 90 W, an impedance of 8 ohm and a sensitivity of 85 dB. The stated frequency response runs from 45 Hz to 25 kHz. The cabinet measures 220 x 370 x 312 mm and is built from 25 mm MDF, and the gross shipping weight of a boxed set is 26 kg. The maker gives a warranty of one year. The driver pairing consists of a 28 mm silk dome tweeter and a 6.5 inch mid-bass driver that combines a paper cone, a long stroke and a large voice coil.

Engineering and use context

Its dividing network is built on a Butterworth type filter with a slope of 12 dB per octave. According to Tonewinner the resulting response curve is quite straight, with fluctuation across the effective band held within plus or minus 2 dB. The MDF used for the box keeps the same 25 mm panel thickness on every wall. Gloss black lacquer is the finish for this version. There is no built-in amplification, so the speaker is driven through its terminals from an external amplifier channel.

Pairing

As a passive design, the TD-7SE needs a separate stereo amplifier. Tonewinner, whose headquarters are in the Panyu District of Guangzhou, builds its own range of stereo integrated amplifiers, from the compact AD-60 to the AD-86D and the Class A AD-3PRO+, so a complete system can be assembled within a single catalogue. In its matching guidance the company notes that speakers with sensitivity this low call for amplifiers with more power and substantial current output.

Alternatives

Tonewinner also builds the TD-3 passive bookshelf speaker, which uses a 28 mm dome tweeter, a 7 inch Kevlar mid-bass unit and a 50 mm thick MDF front baffle.
