The SourcePoint 8 from MoFi Electronics is a smaller relative of the SourcePoint 10, created by Chief Speaker Designer Andrew Jones for spaces where the larger model would not fit. MoFi announced it on 13 April 2023, and it made its public debut at AXPONA 2023 in Schaumburg, Illinois, held from 14 to 16 April, with shipping planned for May 2023. The launch price was USD 2,750 per pair without stands or USD 2,999 per pair including matching stands.

Key specs that matter

A custom 8-inch concentric driver with a paper pulp cone and corrugated surround houses a 1.25-inch soft-dome tweeter carrying a large-diameter voice coil and a wide-roll surround. According to MoFi, the cone and surround were engineered around both resonance behaviour and the needs of the tweeter waveguide, and the large voice coil and wide surround let the tweeter reach down to a crossover frequency of 1.6 kHz. Loading from the cone acting as a waveguide raises tweeter efficiency at the bottom of its range. Frequency response is 47 Hz to 30 kHz. Sensitivity is 87 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m, and the nominal impedance of 8 ohm dips to a minimum of 6.4 ohm. MoFi specifies a minimum amplifier power of 30 W and a maximum of 150 W. Each speaker is 290 mm wide, 456 mm high and 335 mm deep with its grille, or 320 mm deep with the grille removed, and weighs 12.7 kg.

Engineering and use context

Because the new driver is 80 percent of the diameter of the one in the SourcePoint 10, each cabinet dimension was scaled down by the same proportion, which leaves the SourcePoint 8 with about half the internal volume of its sibling. Its Twin-Drive structure uses high-flux neodymium magnets serving both woofer and tweeter, with copper sleeves added to reduce distortion. The sides, top, bottom and back are 19 mm MDF panels finished in real wood veneer and stiffened by two internal braces, while the sculpted, multi-faceted front baffle is 38 mm thick and shaped to control diffraction from the edges. Two rear-firing vents are intended to give high bass output with low turbulence. A removable grille holds on with magnets, and the speaker connects through 5-way binding posts. Buyers can choose satin walnut, black ash or a satin white finish, the last offered only on this model. The warranty runs for five years on parts and labour.

Pairing

At its AXPONA debut the speaker was demonstrated with HiFi Rose electronics, a brand MoFi named as its partner for the show.

Alternatives

The MoFi SourcePoint 10 is the larger SourcePoint stand-mount, with a 10-inch concentric driver and a rated input of up to 200 W.
